I don't feel that this is true. And I pretty certain many people will agree with me. Yeah, it's true not many people will tell you that God has spoken to them. But the truth is, he talks to all of us everyday. The way I see it, God gives me signs to show me what I should be doing. Sunny days are for playing out side with my kids. Stormy weather means it's time to cuddle up on the couch with the family. Sometimes I have really strong urges to visit someone I haven't seen in a while, or I'll keep thinking about a family member for really no reason. To me that's God's way of telling me I need to call them. God speaks to all of us, in many different ways. It's just up to us to listen.
God Bless.

There is a Rumi saying something like: "From what you love, God is speaking to you."

God knows English, but speaks it seldom. He speaks more generally from and to the heart of man/woman.

That is an interesting point though. 'Tis not "believers" that would put a man in the "loony bin" for this, 'Tis the NON-believers.

I understand the question, but the difference between mental illness and fellowship with God is in where you hear the message.Schizophrenia and other mental illnesses manifest as voices heard in the head,or mind, and in some cases,as actual audible voices heard coming from outside the body and heard only by the patient, whereas God speaks to the heart,or sometimes the conscience.
People who have not opened their heart to God will not understand this.

I ask the very same question. Got no good answer. but my answer is the people who put you in the loony bin don't believe him fully. Its like you know there is no boogy monster in the closet or monsters in the dark but your still scared ( for some that is )

Because "God" is not said to talk back.

Hence, if someone that's physically incapable of talking talks to you, the Loony Bin becomes your new home away from home.

well who told you that? God has spoken to me clearly twice in 31 years and I am not in the loony bin yet.
God also has spoken to me through the scriptures many times and does it that way for most people..

I swear I've said that exact thing myself.

It is not true that people cannot receive divine inspiration, insight, guidance and revelations directly from God. Anyone can if they do the right preparations. I've done it.

Some people luck out and make money from books. That book and movie "Conversations with God," is nothing new to me. I've had conversations with God for many years ever since I've learned how to do true meditation from my teacher, The Maitreya, who teaches from his own experience of God.
