Ive been searching for a new camcorder, preferabley DVD, and the most expensieve consumer cameras have 10X optical zoom, while the cheap camcorder have up to 40X optical Zoom. I though the more Opitcal Zoom the better, so why is it like that?

The more expensive cameras have larger CCD imagers. The tiny imagers on the cheap ones make optical magification easier. More expensive cameras also use lenses with higher precision optics which make for sharper images. It is very difficult to hold a camera steady at 10x zoom, i can't imagine how shaky the pictures would look at 40x. I don't consider 40x zoom a benefit.
