this isn't an exotic flute, either (not celtic or native american). and it's already purchased (nonrefundable) - not by me though.
thanks

I have two words for you: Jethro Tull. They won the first Grammy for Heavy Metal. They are a great rock band and have some excellent flute music. Check with your local record store in the rock section

from the oldies rock genre; Chicago's _Colour my World_ has an excellent flute solo as does the Mommas and Pappas _California Dreamin'_ Jethro Tull thrives on flute music.

In the jazz genre; I've always liked the music of Hubert Laws and especially _Land of Passion_ Spyro Gyra uses significant flute as well.

The transverse concert flute that you know own descends from the recorder (fipple flute) and transverse flute of the classical period (now often called the "Irish Flute") and is closely related to all of the exotic flutes. That means that if you are interested in one of the ethnic or ancient flutes, you can use what you learn on the modern with those instruments as well. I especially enjoy playing Native American Flute and recorder even though my formal training has been on concert flute.

Awesome things about the flute? nah - it's just another tool musicians use to make music. No better or "more cool" than any other, just another tool. It's the musician that makes the art "awesome". Make it yours and develop your style and it becomes "awesome" - toot along with everyone else and it's "just another flute." ☺

James Gallaway has a CD out called "Tango del Fuego," it's mostly latin jazz music. It's a lot of fun.

Here are a couple of awesome things about playing the flute.

1. You're a guy, and you'll be surrounded by girls in band practice. Need I say more?

2. Your section will be the most hard-core. You'll statistically make less mistakes than any other instrument in band and you'll be given the hardest parts to play.

Search YouTube for Greg Pattillo - he can beatbox while playing the flute. He has incredible flute skill, too - not just a gimmick while he does beatboxing. If HE cannot get you punped, then you are DEAD already.

Go on Yahoo Groups and join Flutenet. There are about 3,000 of us flutists on there, who will have a LOT of inspiration and ideas for you.
Yes, playing will help with asthma - but you should play because you LOVE it!

If you go to music stores like Ward Brodt, they should have some sheet music for famous bands and songs. That way you can find what you like to listen to and learn how to play it on something you don't like to play.

btw, i play the flute, and i think it's pretty awesome!
Flute Power!!! jk

Brass instruments help with asthma, too, but the flute actually takes more air than a tuba - and a piccolo even more than the flute.

You'll have to go to a music store and get sheet music. but there's a ton of non classical music to play. Stuff from the beatles to movie themes. Classical music isn't bad expand your mind you might discover some really beautiful classical music. A band called Trans-Siberian Orchestra has taken the beauty of classical and mixed it with the art of rock n roll.

Its not all fluffy Classical music
Find a teacher who is willing to let you play the music you like and go for it!

You never know you might end up liking 'classical' music Give it a go instead of brushing it off because its uncool!
