Taking zinc didn't touch this cold, and massive doses of Vit. C haven't helped either. So...I have a completely stopped up nose. I am using Afrin at night, but hate to use it for the daytime since it shortens the time you can use it. Any suggestions on what can open up my breathing???? This is miserable.

Get some airborne and drink it 3x a day. Then to temporarily clear out your nose with a natural remedy....
1C hot water
1tbs lemon juice
1tbs honey
1tsp cayenne pepper

you will have to take breaks while drinking it and it tastes nasty but it will really help you to breath again and trust me.... the Airborne will work.... I get rid of my colds in 2 days! otherwise for relief I would recommend NyQuil both at night and day.

"Medicines are not the only way to relieve a stuffy or runny nose. Often, gentler solutions are better. Try these steps to thin the mucus, which can help you breathe easier and get your nasal secretions back to normal:

Use gentle saline nasal sprays.
Increase the humidity in the air with a vaporizer or humidifier.

Drink extra fluids. Hot tea, broth, or chicken soup may be especially helpful. "

If you don't have a humidifier, try a bowl of very hot water (add lemon if you have it). Put a towel over your head and stand over the bowl.

Okay, since you're posting a question, I assume that you aren't underage so I figure what I'm fixing to tell you. . .you will do so with caution. What has helped me in the past is boiling a pot of water. As soon as the water starts boiling, i turn the stove off and I let the steam rise up and I breathe it in for about a minute or so. Please do not get too close to the pot of hot water. .just lean over it as if you were smelling a pot of soup or something. Just please be careful doing this! It's always worked for me. Good luck. Also, try rubbing some vicks under each nostril.

When I get a cold, and I've been doing it for years, it's my guilty pleasure..... I make myself sneeze. Sniff toilet paper, pepper, or twist up some paper towel and tickle the inside of your nose. You'll sneeze 2 or 3 times and be all clear...

I generally don't think that I should be messing with mother nature in this way, but it's oh so good when I get a cold!!!

I used to use neo sporin whenever I needed it, even if it was too soon. I do the same with afrin. The only thing I had to be careful of was getting addicted. I really used a lot of neo sporin when I was pregnant. It seems I'm allergic to it!
peace

Take a steaming hot shower. Make sure there is a lot of steam. Steam usually loosens it up. When it loosens up blow your nose in the shower.
If it clogs up after a shower. Boil some citrus peels in water and inhale the steam.

Vicks.
Also, when you take a shower, sniff up some of the water & blow, repeatedly.
Saline drops can be used all day long, as it is just salt water.
