I'm looking at buying a Blu-Ray player. They tend to run $299 and up. For an additional $100 I can buy a PS3 that plays Blu-Ray.

My question is, is it a pain to play them off of the PS3? Or is it pretty straight forward.

Blu-Ray players actually run for more than $300 when not on sale from what i have seen. They are $300 right now but its mainly because of holidays. As you see here:

Since a PS3 is $400 and a standard Blu-Ray player will cost you $400 or more then the better way to go is with the PS3.

With Blu-Ray players now a definite format has not been achieved so the firmware for Blu-Ray is updated at times to have more compatibility with movies, etc.. With the PS3 you dont have to worry about this because you can just download it directly from the system update manager on the PS3.

With other players you would have to burn it to a disc and play it in your Blu-Ray player or put it on a memory card which is bit of a hassle.

So to fully answer your question. Yes the better way to go is with the PS3. With it you are getting a Blu-Ray player and a gaming system along with internet for the same price as a standard Blu-Ray player. Also its not a pain at all to play them. Just put them in and they play.

The nice advantage that the PS3 has over any Blu-Ray player (apart from the games), is that Sony makes firmware upgrades to enhance your Blu-Ray experience.

Just two weeks ago, Sony added the Picture in Picture functionality and the Blu-Ray profile 1.0 and profile 2.0 - this is functionality which no other Blu-Ray player on today's market has - and current Blu-Ray players will never have as they do not have the option to upgrade firmware like the PS3 has.

To sum up, if BluRay capabilities change Like they have done this past month), Sony can modify the PS3 to match that. You cannot do that with a Blu-Ray player

It's straight forward; you put in the disc, and watch it. And it's the same quality as any other blu ray player, but with many more features.

The discs autorun when you put them in, as the others have said and a recent firmware update means it's ready for the new blu-ray 1.1 standard.
You may want to pick up a remote though, as using the sixaxis controller isn't ideal (but it is functional)

Naww, I have PS3 it's extremely easy. You just put in it and click play

You can also use the ps3 to play pictures, music, video on your TV screen that you can transfer using USB memory from your computer.

Plus you can view the internet, and best of all, play amazing HD games.

You might as well go with the ps3

With profiles, and players not being able to handle Java titles, the PS3 is the best choice. It seems to be the most upgradeable, and to my knowledge doesn't have java issues like standalone players do.

pretty straight forward to play but the additional wear and tear on the game system may make it not worthwhile in the longrun.
