We have a 5 month old puppy... pit, chow and shar pei.. she is good inside the house, but when she is outside she chews on everything from my plants and pots, to plastic under the barkdust. I have sat outiside with her and scolded her when she does this, and still she does it again. She even chewed off one the sprinkler heads. i have given her rawhide bones, and she snubs them. We keep her inside while we are at work in her kennel. But I cannot be outside with her all the time, we have a 3 year old son, who i have to attend to as well. I have tried to pick up everything outside as well, but she still finds things. How do I get this to stop? Will she grow out of it?

Puppies are like babies... and they have to put everything in their mouths.

She seems to like plastic... have you considered a Kong stuffed with goodies?

Also.. you've already demonstrated to yourself that she is in danger if left outside alone (could eat something that could kill her) so don't leave her outside unattended. If you cannot watch her, put her in a crate.

The only way she'll "grow out of" chewing things is if you are THERE with her and exchanging a "bad" thing to chew for a good one... like a raw meaty bone or a stuffed Kong.

no offense but did you do any research before getting this pup???

pups NEED to be watched ALL THE TIME.. if you have a 3 yr old kid you should NOT have gotten a pup.. and especially not one of this breed

Terriers were bred to be hunters.. attacking and killing with their teeth...
Chows are one of the most notorios dogs for being unsafe.. totally unpredictable they will even attack their best friend...among "dog people" they are considered less safe than Pits...

chewing is becuase its a pup.. still teething AND a result of boredom.. the dog wants something to do and if you havent given it something to do it will find something...

Obedience lessons are a MUST.. they will stimulate the dogs mind and keep it a bit happier.. spending 20 minutes a day practicing this is also a MUST... if you dont have time for that... again you shouldnt have gotten a pup...

this dog is really asking for more attention.. give it a job!

scolding her isnt the answer.. thats actually a reward because its attention... rawhide of course, is not safe for dogs at any rate...

Chewing is natraul and part of hunting instinct. You don't want it to stop but you can provide your pup with things that are better for her to chew on such as rawhide bone,a kong, pigs ears,MEGA TUFFIES
Big Stuffed Toys
Large breed dogs love these extra tough dog toys from Fat Cat, Multipet, & Dog Toys.
Really Tough Toys
Rugged Ball toys, frisbees, rope and rubber toys sized for large breed dogs.
Treat Toys - Medium & Large
also you know them funny balls that you place on the ground that move around with knoby things all around it. it will either freak ur dog out or he'll have a blast chasen it.
just make sure you get aporate sized toys for your size dog all these toys come in many sizes and are excellent for chewers.

THIS IS A GREAT ONE, IVE BEEN DIEING TO GIVE THIS ADVICE AFTER I LEARNED IT A WEEK OR TWO AGO! PUT SOME GOOD SPLASHES OF TABASCO INTO A WATER SPRAY MIST THING, AND SPRAY IT ONTO THE THINGS HE CHEWS. FOR SMALLER MORE PRECISE THINGS, JUST RUB NEAT TABASCO INTO IT!
GOOD LUCK.
