Some religions believe you would be in purgatory until your family makes enough monetary gifts to buy your way to heaven. Personally, I think that"s a crock. When you die, you're dead, that's all folks, no streets made of gold or a burning sulfer pit for all eternity.
Its not the worms you have to worry about after burial, its the beetles.

It depends what faith you practice. For Catholics it would be pugatory, if you are Mormon then you would go to to what's called the terrestrial realm, some faiths believe in heaven and hell only. If you do not believe in God or Jesus and have not asked God for forgiveness then you go to hell. Buudhists believe in reincarnation so there is no heaven and hell only a cycle of life that is based on how well you live in life and that determines what you will be reincarnated to until you reach nirvana which is the end of your reincarnation cycle. I can give several more examples but this should suffice.
I personally believe that after death everyone goes to the same place. I refuse to believe that a just God would condemn a person for believing in him in their own way. I believe all religions are the extension of the same thing. There are way too many similarities between all religions to say that one religion has the truth and the others do not. I believe that's the arrogance of religion to say that one religion is better than the other.

First you need to get your priorities straight. Which judgment do you plan on being present at? The first or the second? What determines this is if you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Saviour or not. If you have, you will be judged at the " judgment seat of Christ" at his second coming . Your good works will be in question. Whether they were done from a good heart or not. All your good works that were not out of a pure heart will be burned up and you will be rewarded for your works that survive. You, your self will not be judged for your sin , as Jesus has already suffered the punishment for your sins which you gained by trusting in him. Thank you Lord Jesus! Those who reject Christ will be judged a thousand years later at the "great white throne" All those who are judged here will be thrown into the lake of fire. Some to worse punishments than other according to their deeds on earth. They do not have the blood of Jesus to claim for their sin and therefore they must suffer the punishment rather than Christ's crucifiction. So you see , no matter how "good "you are , you are not good enough togo toheaven without the shed blood of Jesus. Its a no brainer ...Come to Christ

Purgatory. It really depends on what decade you grew up in, and what the church were saying was the unchanging truth at the time. There have been a lot of changes in the Catholic church....
Also what religion you are makes a difference. For instance, if I am a Muslim and you are a Christian, you're going to hell and I am going to heaven. But if I am Christian and you are Muslim, you are also going to hell and I am going to heaven. Either way you can't win.
If you were not baptised as a baby pre 1980, you will be going to limbo. Due to the newe rules, unbaptised babies after circa 1980 appear to be safe.
Good luck
If you're actually serious, I suggest looking into Buddhism, or spirituality. They will probably bring you closer to the truth than any other organisation. The Celestine Prophesy is an interesting book, you might like it. The Tibetan book of Living and Dying is another good one, quite heavy though... All, that kind of stuff is interesting.
Once again,
Good Luck

Okay, I'm going to try answering this from a more philosophical viewpoint, because to answer based solely on what some particular religion might believe is the answer would be completely unfair and you would just take or leave it and never learn anything. What you have to realize here is that you are asking a question about "values". What I mean by this is that "good enough" or "bad enough" is something that has to be quantified (kinda like rating something from 1 to 10). For either of these "ratings" to work (so to speak), some ONE has to give that rating and thus make some sort of decision about YOUR PERSONAL VALUE. A good comparison would be quality control on the assembly line. Let's say you are given the job of inspecting cogs to make sure they are of the "right quality" before they are shipped to their respective places. You may be given some things to look for, or you may be told to just make the judgment yourself. Either way, for each cog that passes before you, you have to decide whether that cog has "passed" (in which case you allow it to be shipped) or "not passed" (in which case you throw it in the incinerator). I think you get the gist of my little analogy. What your question is essentially saying is "What do I do with the cogs that I'm not sure about"? And the question you should really be asking is "WHO exactly is in charge of quality control?" and "What qualities exactly is that person looking for in order to pass instead of being thrown away?" Your question assumes that the "test" is not pass/fail. Does quality control judge on a curve or give grades from A to F or what? There really only one person who knows. If you believe in God or a higher power, then usually that is the person you have to pose these kinds of questions to. I mean, why would you ask anyone else? Do you really think that I or anyone else on here really has the inside scoop? I will venture to say that I believe there is a definite answer, but why would you ask a fellow student how the teacher grades when you can just ask the teacher to explain it directly?

If you are not saved( accepting Jesus into your heart and asking him to forgive you of your sins) then you will go to hell. That just the facts. You don't have to be an evil or bad person in your lifetime. There are good people with good morals and they still won't make it to heaven because they didn't get saved while they had a chance.
The good news is that its not too late. Its as easy as ABC:
A- ask Jesus to forgive you of your sins
B- Believe that he died on the cross for your sins and rose again.
C- Confess him as your Lord and Savior.
God Bless You

This is NOT Biblical!
Here is what IS Biblical:
Hebrews 9:27-28 (New International Version)
New International Version (NIV)
Copyright © 1973, 1978, 1984 by International Bible Society
27Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
It's heaven or hell!
No in-between!

You are way off-----but here goes everything
First of all, nobody is good enough to go to heaven. NOBODY.
We cannot get to heaven by ANYTHING that has to do with us. There is no one good, no not one. Salvation is a gift from God. It is a free gift. All you or anybody has to do is recieve this free gift by believeing in Jesus Christ and the work that He did on the cross by dieing and shedding His blood for the forgiveness of sins.
You must recognize that you are a sinner and that you need to be saved. If you would accept Christ as your personal Saviour into your heart and follow Him, then you could get to heaven.
It is by the work of Jesus, by taking your place on the cross when it should have been YOU. We are all sinners. We have all fallen short of the glory of God.
The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Trust in Jesus to save you...He is the Way, the Truth and the Life.
One last note, it is appointed for man once to die and then the judgement.
Without the blood of Christ covering our sins...

The bible never talks about a place called "Purgatory"! It does refer to death as a sleep condition that one does not awake from. God being a very loving God, would never condemn a soul to eternal hell fire. So rest assure, its only a subconscious state. The final decision on what happens to us is engraved within our heart, that God examines. The bible speaks of many encounters where people lived a life of sin but still gained God's favor by having a pure heart. Never give up trying to do what is right. It will pay off.

You can not go to Heaven based only on your own good deeds. If you have ever sinned even once in your life you will go to Hell unless you believe with all your heart, body, and soul that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He came to Earth to die on the cross for the forgivness of sins and ressurected on the third day. Therefore you either go to Heaven or Hell
