Aside from not being able to play PS2 games. It does not have the media card readers and only has two USB ports. Obviously it does not have a much memory. But, aside from three two, its the same. Everyone else's answer were almost correct.
The game play or performance is not weaker. It simply just has less features.

I was looking into this myself since I'm getting a PS3 soon. The differences are:
1) 80GB PS3 has 40 more GB of memory, which is only really useful if you are going to use the PS3 as a multimedia center and put music, movies, etc on there
2) 80GB is $100 more than 40GB
3) 80GB comes with motorstorm 40GB comes with spiderman 3 on blue ray
4) 80GB can play some PS2 games but not all of them vs 40 can't play any PS2 games
5) 80GB PS3 has 4 USB ports and 3 flash drives, while the 40 GB only has 2 USB ports and no flash drives. Again this is only really necessary for the multimedia how ever i hear it makes transferring game saves easier from PS3 to PS3
gameplay and the Internet wifi connection are exactly the same from the 40GB model to the 80GB model. Honestly I would go with the 40GB PS3 because even the 80GB one cant play as many PS2 games and if your not using your PS3 as a multimedia center its pointless to get the extra 40GB.

The two PS3's are exactly the same except for the following exception:
You cannot play PS2 or PS1 Games on the 40GB PS3.
To answer your questions,
GAME PLAY IS NOT SLOWER. 40GB IS JUST MEMORY. 40GB just means there is less space to store music and stuff ont he hard drave.
Internet connection is exactly the same on both systems.

1.Cant play any or not many PS2 games on the 40gb.
2.HDD is bigger in the 80gb obviously
3.40gb has 2 USB ports and 80gb has 4.
4.80gb is more expensive.
I would go with the 80gb.

Sony's calling it a price drop, but really, they are discontinuing the current 80GB and upgrading the existing 40GB without changing its price.

Everything is the exact same except for:
Playability of PS2 games.
and
Memory (which isn't a huge deal, unless you plan on downloading tons of media, but for just plain game saving its fine)
So if you dont care about not being able to play PS2 games... save yourself the $100.
