Wolves and wild dogs (related closely to domestic dogs) must do this at nighttime for warmth and security. They'd freeze without warmth, get attacked by a predator without security. It makes them feel a lot safer. This applies to multiple other animals as well.

Warmth, comfort, security.... I would say anyway. Same way as couples sleep together in bed I guess.

"Three Dog Night" is another term for "Mighty effen cold!" :-) It refers to three dogs sleeping together in a snow hole.
