The reason I ask is my first one was more friendly than this one and acted much different. This one is skiddish and trys to hide and bites. I think this one is a female. How do you tell?

You need to look at the cere, which is located just above the beak. If it is brownish beige then it is a female and if it is a bluish purple then you have a male. Hope this helps!

As others said, look at the "cere", the flesh above the beak where the nostrils are.

The male shows a more cool bluish cast, this can be anything from dark greyish blue to pale lavender and outright purple blue.

The female has a more warm tone, this can be yellow, orange, browns, flesh, tan, etc.

Parakeets have also been known to change gender when very young. Say if you have a colony of 10 birds, all young females, at least one will turn into a male. Yup!

Also, you can get an idea of a budgie's (keet) age by the stripes on its head. The closer to the cere they are, the younger the bird.

The male's sex organ is like a corkscrew curled up inside until it needs it. There is a way to manipulate the opening (cloaca) so that you can tell, but on a bird so fragile, you can massively damage or kill your pet if you don't know what you are doing.

Each bird will have its own personality and some are just more skittish than others. Be calm, gentle, and quiet and hand tame your bird daily. Wear a glove if you must at first and do not chase your bird around the cage to catch it. The standard cage lifts off the base, reach up while the bird is on its perch and gently grip it by the shoulders, holding the wings closed so they do not flap.

Learn to clip your bird's wings properly... it takes two to do it quickly and easily. You will need to do this in the beginning while you hand tame because the easier the bird flies, the more you wind up chasing the bird around and traumatizing it.

If you want your bird to learn to talk it must be the only one, otherwise it will bond with another bird instead of you.

I heard if the top part of the beak where its nostrils are located, if that is blue you can distiguish the bird a male

Look at the cere, the fleshy part above the beak where the nostrils are. A young male will have a blue or lavender cere, a female will have a white cere. As the bird matures, the male's nostrils will turn dark blue and the female's nostrils will turn brown or white

iusaully while they're toddlers the ceres are frequently in basic terms blue. As grown the ceres frequently mature to specific colours in line with their intercourse. woman parakeets improve brown or pink ceres. Male parakeets improve blue ceres. for sure, there are a number of ceres that are in-between colours. the only real thank you to renowned the intercourse of a parakeet is to take it on your vet and ask!

It's REALLY hard to tell with parakeets. Usually the way you go is the color of the nostrils....males will usually have bluish ones, while females usually have pinkish or white-ish ones. Sometimes, though, there are exceptions and the best way to know for certain is to go by a blood test. Birds genitals are often not very visible from the outside; so like I said, it can be really hard to tell sometimes.

Of course, though, you will know FOR SURE if you see your bird lay eggs or somethin'... ;)

The way you can tell is the strip right above the beek that has the two holes. If it's blue than it's male. If it's female than its more of a pinkish or flesh color. That's what the pet store told us. Here's a web site that says the same thing.

look right above the beak. If the area that looks like her nose is brown or pink, it is a girl and if it is deep blue, it is a boy. Often, it is hard to tell and the only sure way to find out is to take it to the vet.

Look at the cere (the nostril skin). Females are one color, males are another. I don't remember which is the yellow, but a parakeet info site should have it.
