I carry a handgun anytime I am out of my house. I also have another one in my truck. I have guns on all levels of my house that can be reached quickly and used to defend my home. I also carry a knife, but more for general use than self defense.

When I lived in Los Angeles I had a rifle and shotgun at home. Now I can't legally have a weapon as I live in Australia. Once, after midnight, I closed my shop and opened the back of my station wagon. A young man came up holding a length of pipe and said "Give me your money or I'll bash you with this." I reached in the back of my car and grabbed a tire iron, and said "back off or I'll bash YOU with THIS. He thought about this for two seconds, and then ran off. I didn't show him I was scared(even though I WAS).
Sometimes I carry a container of ground pepper in my pocket, to throw in someone's face...almost as effective as Mace.

I don't live in a state the issues permits readily. But if I did, I generally think it's impractical. I'm a good shot, but if someone were to try to rob me at gunpoint, I doubt I would be able to get the gun out in time to be useful. And generally speaking, if you have the time to react like that, you probably have the time to take evasive action. (My home is a different story, I have plenty of protection there, except for when I lived in DC and it was not legal, I did not like that and don't live in the District for that very reason).
Furthermore, I've lived in urban areas most of my life (Philly and DC mostly) and have worked in one of the roughest parts of DC and have never been in a situation where I felt a weapon would be necessary. That said, my appearance might have something to do with why people with bad intentions steer clear of me.

Well when I was 18 and pretty stupid I carried a pipe in my car.... I don't know what I was exactly planning on doing for sure with it but it was definitely not a good idea. Now I do carry pepperspray on me... Since in Michigan you can only have 2%OC it's kinda worthless but I figure it's better than nothing.

If you can get a concealed handgun license in your state, I urge you to do so.
I have a Walther P99 compact that I carry. I have had a concealed weapons permit since 1996.

I would but worry more that the law would cause me to suffer for protaecting myself, and if a cop pulled me over that did not like my looks or was on some power trip, it would cause me more problems than my right to carry, I have never needed one as of yet, but I shouldn't have to feel powerless just because we have cops to protect us. They mite not be around when I need them!

When I was in college, I carried a can of Easy Off oven spray.
Laugh if you want, but a face full of that will stop ANY attacker.
