I'm married and have a child on the way, I've herd that the air force has a lot of jobs that allow you to go home everyday to see your family, and work a normal 9-5 job.

Im good with computers, and learn VERY quick with almost anything. I love doing new things and doing things quick. I love the benefits the military has to offer for both me and my family, I just want a "normal" job, so I can come home and see my wife and "soon to be" child every day. Is there any carrier out there for me in the air force?

in the Royal Air Force, we employ civilians to aid our own personel with admin issues such as pay, recruitment, stock and deployment arrangements. try and look into that if you can

Ay yi yi. We have jobs with "normal hours" however, comma, pause, you won't work normal hours when you deploy and the way of the Air Force is to deploy, no job is "safe." And you don't get paid overtime. Even in a "normal" job, you will still play exercises with extended shifts, you will be part of a rent-a-crowd because some bigwig or other is coming to visit the troops, and you can count on staying late or coming in early because some project absolutely, positively is going to get done. Whether you believe in its validity or not. What would it be like if you were stationed in Japan or, God forbid, California?
I'm paraphrasing Ronald Reagan, "there is no free lunch."

On the other hand, you will never find anything as rewarding as serving your country and being part of something that was here before you and will continue long after you are gone.

Have you considered civil service?

Take the ASVAB and if you don't get a guaranteed job go in with guaranteed Admininstration. So that way in boot camp you will be able to pick and administrative job. most jobs in the air force you will be able to come home everyday... it's just what time you get home because some jobs are shift jobs. your first step is to go to a recruiter... take your wife with you. also if you go to usmilitary. about .com they have a list of all the jobs in the service and job descriptions. Also if you go to airforce.com you can chat with a recruiter on there. They will give you the rundown.

Also think about why you are joining the air force... if it is the benefits go work for the city, state, or county. they have great benefits including health insurance and retirement, and it will be a 9-5 job without deployments. If there is another reason you want to join, then thank you for your service and commitment but if it's just for the benefits... find another government sector to work for they all have great benefits.

There are alot of jobs in the AF that work "normal" hours. But, even so, you should enlist to be part of something greater. Yeah, it's nice to have job security, and your family taken care of. But, if your biggest concern is "normal" duty hours, I think you're enlisting for the wrong reasons. Yes, family is first, but the needs of the AF are too. What makes you so special to only want normal duty hours, vs. everyone else who works shifts?? I think you better do some soul searching before you make any commitment. Boy, are you really gonna be hurting if you have to deploy!!

EDIT: After re-reading your statement, you said you want to be with your wife and soon to be child every day. While, that is awesome, in the military that may not be always possible. Both of you have to accept the fact it might not always be that way. Most of the time, maybe. But not always. I'm a single dad, and deployed right now. It happens, so go in with both eyes wide open.

ANY JOB has the potential to deploy. In addition, there will be times when are scheduled to work on weekends or stand a watch.

If you want a M-F 9-5 job.. then ANY branch of the military is not going to work. Plus you have to assume that your Basic training and schooling your family will NOT be allowed to join you..and we are talking up to six months or longer depending on school.

it really depends on what you want to do. my hubby is in the postal squardron. he works from 7am-4or5 and he sometimes works weekends. he is deployed every 3 years for upto 6 months. he used to be an A-10 electrition (sp?) we never knew what his hours were going to be. he would be gone most the day and be home the next.
i would take the test see what is available for you and go from there. but also remember you will not always be stationed in the states. we have been stationed overseas since 2001 and probably wont be returning until 2010-2015.
coming from a wives point, your wife needs to be ready for this too. its not just you that has to deal with the military.

All branches have normal jobs, and at times (maybe about 1/2 the time over the course of a career, maybe more) the hours can be "normal". But there is always the potential for long hard hours during emergencies and especially during deployments (you usually don't get weekends off in war zones for example). If you are looking for a normal job with regular hours I would suggest private industry.

Look for an admin job like finance or personnel. 730-430 m-f schedule. Weekends and holidays off. You shoot a rifle every 2-3 years. Every has the possibility of deploying but thats a sacrifice we all make.

DON'T JOIN THE MILITARY IF YOU WANT 9 TO 5. The military is a career (carrier?)... not a job. When you are in the military you can't just say... "oh, it's quitting time.. I need to be home with my family now"... No it doesn't work that way.

You finish when the job is finished... period. And military families understand this.
