Choleen---- I am far from those harsh words you choose to write. Sounds like you may have a problem!

I have the opposite problem! I like black because it does not show the dirt! My mom insists on buying light pink which shows every speck of dirt. Ugh!
I say accept the gift and be grateful. Have her wear it some time you expect her to get really dirty.

I agree with "accept the gift and express gratitude". You gain nothing by following the suggestion I saw posted here to remind her it's your child, as if she didn't know that, and to tell her to "back off." The confrontational stuff is so neanderthal.
You want her good will, you may need her help some day, so don't offend her over such a pickyune thing. Besides, it only benefits your child to have a doting grandmother or two. I think your mother in law may be giving her black because she doesn't see that in the kid's wardrobe. Choose your battles. This ain't a big deal.

Maybe you shouldn't take it back yet. Like the person above me said, it doesn't show dirt =P Try to understand why she buys black all the time. Is it because she's a depressed person? Or just cause she likes the color? If it's because she's depressed, I would suggest hiding the clothes sometime until she comes. If it's just because she likes the color, I think it's alright =)
If you don't know why she always buys black, maybe you could ask her nicely?

You should be grateful that your mother-in-law takes an interest in your daughter and has purchased, as well as obviously continues, to purchase gifts for her. I would take them, be gracious about it and either do one of two things. 1.) Add colorful accessories to it (shoes, purse, scarf, etc.) or 2.) have your daughter wear the outfit when you know you are going to see your in-laws or other in-law relatives and make sure they know your mother-in-law purchased it for her granddaughter. Maybe all she wants is some recognition for her purchase(s). I know I would be grateful as in 15 years my mother-in-law has never bought our daughter anything...you are blessed!

I wouldn't worry about it too much. When someone gives my daughter clothes I really don't like I just let her wear them as "shop clothes" or "play clothes" because she likes to go out the her daddy's shop & "help" him fix the cars & she gets all dirty but she's wearing her shop clothes so she don't mess up her good clothes

If you don't like it then take it back. Just tell her you had to exchange it & show her the new outfit and say Thanks.

What is wrong with a child wearing black? You sound pretty selfish as well as disrespectful. Maybe you need to be reminded that this is the woman who gave birth to the man you CHOSE to father your daughter.

I love it when my 3-year-old daughter wears black - she looks so fancy and cute and expensive. I just bought a black velor outfit for my daughter that she wore for Christmas.
