I have one lovebird and it is shy. It won't get on my finger unless I force it to. She has a lot of toys and a mirror but everytime she looks at the mirror she goes crazy. I don't know if I need another one to keep her busy?

They need a mate. The mirror thing is natural for many birds. I play with my keets with the mirrors. My friend has love birds & they are not always friendly & playful. When she was bringing her hatchlings up she had to hand feed them to make them more friendly. Hope this helps.

If you get another bird, the bird you currently have will bond more to the other bird than to you. So it's up to you, do you want the bird to be tame and social with you? Or are you OK with the birds being good friends instead of looking to you for attention? A little more work with the bird everyday can end up helping in taming a tremendous amount. Take out the mirror as well, that can help. Mirrors and lovebirds usually are not a good idea. Behavior issues seem to pop up more with them than some other breeds.

Contrary to popular belief lovebirds DO NOT have to be kept in pairs. Single birds that get daily interaction with their people are just as happy as a bird in a pair.

Also be aware that lovebirds are not really lovey either. They can and often do, fight to the death with one another or other birds. Just because you find a bird that you like that seems like it would be a good addition does not, by any means, mean that your current bird will accept it. You will have to keep the new bird separated from your current bird and work on slowly introducing them to one another. Even then, it may or may not work out between them.

hmmm love birds, i use to breed them and can differ on thier name of love,, they are rarley friendly like a cockatiel , have been known to do nasty things to another love bird if they dont "hit it off" but your best thing if you get another one, take out the mirror for a few weeks then get another, keep it in a seperate cage, then put the cages close together, but not close enough that they can reach each other.... this is a way of intorducing birds. the one you have has HIS home and may not want a new roomate unless he met him or her. so this way its a nuetral thing, sometimes i would take the two side by side and move them into a different cage or his while he is aside with new toys ect so the old one wont think its HIS house, then they are both new and neutral on the "pecking" order to speak,, buy yes every bird needs a friend unless you are its friend then no... good luck j
