We had our office party last week. We exchanged white elephant gifts. I ended up getting my boss's mother-in-laws ashes. I have no idea why he gave away her remains like that. I know that he just recently went through a nasty divorce with his wife.

I don't know what to do with this urn thing?!?!?! I'm scared to throw it out in case my boss asks about it later in the future.

Please help!

Display it proudly in your office. It should make a great place to hide your weed.

His mother-in-law's ashes, and he just divorced... I'd try to track down the wife and discreetly return them, or have someone else do it, such as the police... so your boss (who sounds either insane or just really vindictive, by the way) doesn't find out and make your life hell.

I'd also start job-searching, probably. Or talk to HR. A boss who is so unstable that he gives away his wife's mother's ashes at a Christmas party does NOT sound like someone I'd want to be stuck in an office with for any length of time. Get out before he does something even crazier!

I think I would try to contact the ex-wife. If those are really her mother's ashes she should get them back. Secondly, if those really are your boss's mother-in-laws ashes, this was done in very poor taste and is inappropriate for an office situation. Once you verify those are indeed human remains I would report your boss to his superior or your company's HR department.

call his ex wifes attorny anonomously, and tell him you have in your posession an item of very personal interest to one of his clients and would like to return it without cost to him under the understadning thet it costs you nothing, and the only way you can be asssured of this it that he ( and the exwife) sign a confideiality agreement that states that the entire event is confidenial and the other will be liable ofr any damage caused by devulding any information that is exchanged.. ( like you getting fired)..

you know what?... keep your hands clean.. have your attorny do it under the condition that he collects his fee from her.... if she is not interested, follow up with the next of kin until someone claims it....

If it really gets to a dead end, you are free to dispose of them as you wish.... I would suggest on your bosses front lawn.... or in small doses inhis coffee

Your boss is a moron for giving out such a gift. Obviously he thinks it is funny. Ide give it back to him and hope he doesnt fire you. Ive never heard of this before. Some people throw ashes in the sea. Try that.

Pretty strange. Are you sure they are really human ashes?
You can't just go scatter them any where because you will need a permit to do that.Ask the man if he wants them back and if not contact a funeral parlor or coroners office to find out what to do with them. They will get a giggle out of how you got them.

I would politely return them to your boss. It was not right for him to give them to you in the first place. If you don't feel comfortable handing them back in person, then leave the urn at the door of his office. It is his responsibility to either return them to his ex-wife or dispose of them in a respectful manner.

If this is a joke, I can't help you.
If this is for real. I would give it back to your boss. Better yet, put it back on his desk and write a note on it saying that you can't accept it, it's against your beliefs.

Gross! Quietly and without fuss, give them back to him. Tell him you are just not comfortable with this gift.
