Go next to the Saco River Jetty. Fill up a porous bag with jack mackerel, bread, and oil. Then tie a long thick string onto the chum bag. Throw the bag out as far as you can then slowly bring it in. Do this a few times. After you do that toss out a cast net.

Shiner Traps

Shiners are hard to catch in a bait trap in the winter. They don't feed much when the water is cold. Now I catch them in the summer and fall and keep them in an underwater pen to have available for ice fishing. The best bait I have found is rotten chicken. Leave it out until it gets really slimy and stinky. Put it in the bait trap and throw it off the dock.

I have tried numerous times using a metal cage trap and never had any luck with golden shiners, you can try a small can of dog food(punch a number of holes in it ) and some bread....
I usually have to use a small salmon egg hook and a split shot with green giant niblet corn(has smaller kernels)

i lived in florida for four years and always used a cast net they work the best, you can use them on a dock in the water or even on the boat. i resently moved back to maine and am looking forward to fishing when it warms up a bit!!!
