It is important to some because without this teaching, many other beliefs would also be proven false. This doctrine is not found in the scriptures, nor is there any evidence in the Bible or otherwise suggesting that Joseph had been married before.
What are the historical origins of the adoration of Mary?
Says Catholic priest Andrew Greeley: “Mary is one of the most powerful religious symbols in the history of the Western world . . . The Mary symbol links Christianity directly to the ancient religions of mother goddesses.”—The Making of the Popes 1978 (U.S.A., 1979), p. 227.
Of interest is the location where the teaching that Mary is the Mother of God was confirmed. “The Council of Ephesus assembled in the basilica of the Theotokos in 431. There, if anywhere, in the city so notorious for its devotion to Artemis, or Diana as the Romans called her, where her image was said to have fallen from heaven, under the shadow of the great temple dedicated to the Magna Mater since 330 B.C. and containing, according to tradition, a temporary residence of Mary, the title ‘God-bearer’ hardly could fail to be upheld.”—The Cult of the Mother-Goddess (New York, 1959), E. O. James, p. 207

The idea of Jesus having brothers comes from a translation error in the KJV. The original Greek uses a word that only means "Close Relative" and could mean a cousin.
Catholics believe that Mary remained a virgin because in one of the books of the Apochrypha, Mary expresses concern over marrying Joseph because she took a vow to remain a virgin. Catholics do not believe that the mother of Jesus would break a vow to God -- so she would have to remain a virgin.
Protestants do not include these scriptures in their version of the Bible. For some reason, the men who created many of the protestant religions decided to exclude certain books. Catholics have had these books as part of the canon since the Bible was first formalized at the Council of Rome in the 4th century.

That is the catholic belief, in reality they teach the isis and osiris dogma. Yahshua answers this question. She was only righteous.
Joh 19:26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
Joh 19:27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

Its Not. Elevating Mary to a Position not given to her such as " Mother of God" is tradition and Not scriptural. Jesus Christ did not put the emphasis on any fleshly relationship to Mary. Once a woman exclaimed: “Happy the womb that bore you and the breasts you sucked!” Answering that exclamation, Jesus said: “Still happier those who hear the word of God and keep it!” (Luke 11:27, 28, JB) Great though the privilege was of bearing God’s Son, Mary’s greatest happiness therefore would lie in being God’s humble servant, ‘hearing his word and keeping it.’ Note, too, that when told that his mother and brothers wanted to see him, Jesus extended his hand toward his disciples and said: “There are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of my heavenly Father is brother and sister and mother to me.” (Matt. 12:47-50) Again, the words emphasized the spiritual relationship as being more important than the physical relationship.

I don't understand that. I mean it was important for her to have been a virgin when Christ was born so as not to taint the child with man's sin nature. At least that is what I heard Dr. Charles Stanley say in his sermon on the TV sunday before Christmas. After Jesus was born she was married and had more kids so she obviously didn't stay a virgin.

Only the Roman church believes that Mary was a perpetual virgin. But I have often wondered the same thing.

That is a lie dreamed up by people and is contrary to the Bible. The Bible tells us of JESUS having brothers. Some people want to elevate Mary and make her somehow devine but it is not true. That is just another example of why you need to read and study the Bible for yourself.

It isn't. I assume it's an old tradition ( virgin birth) annexed from other religions, such as Mithraism.
