My son has been misbehaving at church according to his teacher. He has Asperger's Syndrome and ADHD and I medicate him during the week for school. On Sundays I don't med him so that he can eat. His med takes away his appetite. Help!

The meds help him to be able to pay attention and be able to control his emotions and attention. You are not helping him by not giving it to him on the weekends.

THIS I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE.

My daughter has Autism and ADHD.

Have you spoke to a nutrionist? The reason I am asking is I have read articles in magazines and papers that sometimes it is the child's diet something they eat that brings on these bad behaviors( I read an article that this child would go into fits and be out of comtrol and the mom was at her wits end, and she found out the child had a chemical imbalance and it was from dairy) I would talk to your doctor I know there are cases that meds are the answer but I think it is the easy way out and maybe we as parents should do better or more research before we agree to use meds for the answer to a problem. Good luck and check on this is may make a world of difference.

my 15 year old child has adhd and aspergers syndrome and i run a support group in my area. I also do not give my child meds at weekends or school holidays as we can cope at home with the routine we have and like you say, it gives them a chance to eat properly. Your son is probably playing up because he is bored. Perhaps the teacher can prepare for him beforehand. My child's Sunday school teacher embraced the conditions and found success in making a few minor changes. one of them was to give my child a plastic tangle twister to fiddle with in his hand when he got bored. Your son is a child with disabilities and it is up to the teacher to accommodate them or at least try. Don't give your child meds at weekends just to please someone else for a couple of hours, instead try and get the teacher to work with you

You need to ensure that he takes the medication every day.Talk to the Sunday school teacher and I am sure he or she can find outlets for him to be active. You also need to go back to the doctor about his appetite or put him on mult vitamins because he needs the nourishment to grow.

if the teachers at his current church can't cope with him, it may be an idea to try to find another church. i don't see his problems as "misbehaving", they are symptoms of his conditions, & if others can't see that then perhaps they're not the ones to teach him. when you think about it, he'll be having (or should be having) specialised teaching in ordinary school. he needs someone who understands to teach him in church too. i hope you can find an understanding church for him & please don't medicate him just to suit others. his nutrician is just as important as his spiritual growth. good luck with it & God bless, diane.

try telling the teacher why he acts the way he does. i'm sure that if you talk to his teacher and talk to him about appropriate ways to behave in church or find another outlet for his energy .
