There are some additions to what has been answered already.
The owner gets the same points as the driver for finishing position of the car. He also gets points just for entering a car in a race even if it does not qualify to race. Drivers do not get these points.
A car may be higher in owners points than the driver.
In the Busch series this year, the 29 car with Burton and Wimmer won the owners championship. While Edward won the drivers championship. Second time this has happened.

Owner points (or more acurately car points) are the points the car earns no matter who the driver is...This is scored the same way as the drivers points are, w/ one exception...If a car does not qualify for a race, that owner will still earn points, based on the qualifying speed (fastest non-qualified car, 31 points, next 28, etc)...If, on the rare occasion there are more than 11 cars not make the race, the 11th fastest non-qualified car back earns 1 owner point...An example of this was the 55 car last year... Michael Waltrip, in the 1st 11 races only qualified for the Daytona 500, but he attempted to qualify for all the races...Waltrip the driver (after his penalty) had -27 points until then...But Waltrip the owner kept earning points b/c of attempting to qualify....The top 35 cars in points from 2007, have automatic spots in the 1st 5 races of 2008...For the 6th race, the top 35 cars from 2008 will

Owner points are awarded to the owner of each car based on where the car finishes the race. In the case of the 01 Chevy from last year all the points that the car got were awarded to the owner of the car while each driver got individual driver points from each race. Owner points are used to determine the cars that are automatically locked into the field for each race. The top 35 cars by owner points qualify for every race.

Owner points in Nascar is a set of points for teams and if your not in the top 35, you are not guaranteed a spot for that weekends race. For example a new team that just started will have 0 owner points, but a team that has been in it is guaranteed in. An Exception is the Champions Provisional, given to past champions (for 6 races they are guaranteed a spot if they don't make it on speed) Hopefully this isn't confusing. When a car races in NASCAR, not only does the driver DRIVING it get the points for where he finished in the race, but the owner of the car does as well.

This is basically for the cars with multiple drivers or for part-time teams.
