I think if both the mother and father are fit parents, custody should be equally shared (50/50) neither parent is better than the other in my opinion.

That's way too vague of a question.
Ideally parents should have joint custody. If this is not possible for whatever reason the more responsible and stable parent should have custody.
My husband and I know a couple who had a son about 5 years ago, the mother is a total waste of space but the father is an amazing guy who loves his son very much and takes excellent care of him. Really giving the father full custody would be best for the child, but because of the bias towards mothers they give her custody and him visitation. Even though she dumps her son on the dad 5 days out of the week so she can party/drink and screw around.

In many cases, I think the mother should have physical custody of a child until school age (with generous exchange with father). Once that child is school aged, then either parent should be able to have custody unless they are unfit.
However, what actually happens (especially Texas) is that even if the mother is a crack-head, she will get custody. Unbelievably, men lose parental rights due to non-support, while the mother does not lose parental rights for sitting on welfare. The mother is rarely, if ever, held to contempt of court for withholding visitation, while the father can't even peep about receiving child support without threat of losing custody.

It depends on the mother. Some kids are better off with the father or someone else besides the mother. It depends on the situation

most cases mothers do have custody but it all depends on the situation they are in if that can provide financially for this child and if they have time in their lives to be that parent.

It really depends on the situation. I think it would be better if both parents just had joint custody, if both are good parents of course.

Thats too bland of a question to answer. It all kepends on the situation, sometimes the mother sometimes the father and sometimes they need to share.
