Can I get my status back quickly if I break this 6 month rule, or would I have to re-apply and go through the whole process again?

The law says that you have to be in Canada 730 days in a period of 5 years. It does not say anything about the more than 6 months period.
I suggest you check with an immigration officer in your city, or you can call immigration and citicenship Canada (it is listed in the yellow pages), or you can go and check with one of the hundred agencies to help immigrants.

I am a Canadian citizen that has been living in the USA for 8 years now. The healthcare went at the 6 month mark. After a year I was no longer considered a Canadian resident. I pay my taxes to Uncle Obama now.

By Canadian agreement with all UN member nations, you will automatically become a citizen of the country you are visiting and will not be allowed to leave.

I think they will let you in OK, but may just ask a lot of questions more than they otherwise would.
Talk with the immigration people there before you leave.

Is there an expiration date somewhere? Cuz how would anybody know how long you're out of the country. And I always thought you would always be a citizen until you renounced it.
