Do I need a passport?!?

Going to Canada from Mich. in Feb 08, is a drivers license and birth certificate good enough? I will be driving, and kinds concerned with getting back into the states

The US has recently changed its laws about 'proof of nationality' when their citizens visit Mexico and Canada.

You NOW need a passport.
