Brush your teeth after eating or drinking anything other than water. Rinse mouth with Biotene mouthwash. Don't smoke, french kiss, or perform oral sex. Suck on ice chips to reduec swelling. Mix a little sea salt with warm water and hold it in your mouth for 3-5 minutes twice a day.

Do all this until it's healed. Then just brush and use mouthwash when you wake up, after eating, and before bed.

The ideal procedure depends on the school of aftercare you follow. There are many different opions on how you should care for a new piercing. The ideal method is the one that works for you, keeps your piercing clean, and does not irritate your mouth in the process.

The old instructions for oral piercings were to use listerine after eating or drinking anything other than water. These instructions turn out to be too harsh for many mouths. After a few days of this many folks end up sore and quit cleaning as well as they should. So this was uncomfortable and then left the client open to infection. If you are determined to use listerine dilute it 50/50 with water.

The new directions most piercers will accept are to use a non-alcoholic mouthwash instead. Biotene is an enzyme based mouthwash that will not burn the mouth the way listerine and other alcohol mouthwashes can.

Another option is to use a saline rinse. This method will clean out things like food debris that should not be in your mouth and kill some bacteria as well. Not everyone is comfortable with such a simple, non-medical solution but if you use it correctly, you can heal just as well.

Whichever rinse you choose, use it every time you get your mouth dirty. If you eat, drink or smoke, rinse your mouth. Rinse before bed and after getting up. Rinse after brushing your teeth twice a day. Rinse if your tongue just feels like it could use a cleaning. Biotene and saline are both safe to use as often as needed. Keep cleaning your mouth out until your tongue seems to be recovered. Usually two weeks is the minimum recommened for rinsing. After that continue with good oral hygine to keep your piercing healthy.
