They are not an instant solution, but longer term they may help things to some degree. I find that using a probiotic has helped my general health - I get colds and things much less often than I used to.
I presume that your Doctor has given you information to help with your diet. As I understand it, you should try to get more fibre into your diet (increase it gradually if you don't get much now). You should also be suspicious of foods such as chocolate, coffee, cheese, onion and generally high fat foods. These tend to be some of the more common triggers.
For trapped gas, there are two things that I find help - peppermint tea (sweeten with a little honey if necessary) and if it's really uncomfortable, try assuming the 'looking under sofa' position (kneeling with bottom in the air) which tends to bring things to the surface relatively quickly.

i suffer with IBS and they didn't do anything to help me. the only thing that helps is the stuff i get from my doctor, although i have resorted to peppermint tea to help me before now and when i have been really bad i have even taken gripe water to help when i have got the really nasty pains associated with the bloated gassy feeling .
