Do you need a viewfinder in a compact digital camera?

Im looking at some cameras that dont have viewfinders.
Do you need one?
What do they do?

They're good if you don't want to use the screen or can't see it. Also, it can be good to hold the camera against your face to steady it if you're shooting without the flash in low light.

A viewfinder is handy but many people never use it.

Not really. I got a really good 10MP digital camera for Crimbo and I prefer not to have the viewfinder! It's probably because I wear glasses and always 'crash' into the camera! Lol.

You just look at the screen on the back of the camera where you would usally find the viewfinder and you can see what the picture will look like. It's really easy :)

I wouldn't have a camera without it! Some cameras are worthless in bright sunlight with just the lcd screen. But with the viewfinder, you can compose the picture in any light.

It's helpful to have them for times when you can't see the screen very well, like in bright sunlight. I do use my viewfinder from time to time, I wouldn't want a camera that didn't have that option.

You need a viewfinder its the only, and fastest way to frame the picture correctly.

Viewfinder will save on battery life. LCD screens suck the life out of batteries.

they automatically set the camera so it finds the centre of something.
Useful if its dark and you cant see exactly where the camera is pointing.

you dont NEED one, but they sure do help !
