I am thinking of buying an assault rifle. Something along the lines of a ar-15 look alike. What does it take to buy something like this?

Indiana is one of the more liberal States when it comes to Assault Type Weapons. The only requirement is you be 18 years of age and go thru the cursory NIC's background check at the time of purchase. No waiting period. No limit on high capacity magazines. All it takes is a state issued I.D. (Drivers License etc) to prove residency and you are good to go........

*NOTE..Tax Stamps are required for fully automatic weapons
(machine guns)only!

Last I heard Indiana laws let you own and shoot assault rifles- as in full auto capable rifles- with the federal stamps, no state ban added- the old Tommy gun and machine gun collectors have a couple shoots in the state. That covers your first sentence. Second sentence- AR15 look alike as in a self loading/semi auto rifle is NOT an assault rifle, you can go to store and show proof of residency, indentification, fill out 4473 form and get background check verified - not felon, adjudged mental defective record, domestic violence, dishonorable discharge, restraining order in records saying you can't have gun. pay money and take with.

you just go into a store and buy it. the assault weapon ban ended in '04, so they're just like buying any other gun
