I am a Hindu and I take pride in my religion. Although I never really looked into it with depth I follow what my parents have taught me. I am beginning to have doubts about my religion.... everyone has their own idea of what Hinduism really is, especially on Yahoo! Answers... that is what i see. Some people think of Hindus as people who basically worship everything they see. Some people think of Hindus as people who just do yoga. Some people think that Hindus worship 330 million gods while other disagree and say that they only worship one. Some people (with mental issues) think that Hindus gods are perverts...

I'm sorry but I'd have to say that with this confusion, 50 years or so from now... the beliefs of Hinduism will not be as popular or as successful as they are failing to be right now.

I believe that if you want to believe in a religion, you have to be clear in what you believe in.

Don't you agree?

All opinions are welcome.

Christianity isn't nearly as conflicted as Hinduism is.

I should know because i study in a Catholic shcool. (Isn't that strange, I'm a Hindu studying in a Catholic School).

I agree w/ ssrvj.

What i meant to say was that..
50 years from now, Hinduism won't be as strong as it is. And besides, I think it's possible for one to be confused about his/her own religion.

I agree, you should be clear about what you believe in.

Don't worry, Hinduism has been around longer than just about any religion. You have very deep roots, and these other religions that talk crap have probably borrowed more than they think from Hindu.

To answer, I think right now Christianity is the most controversial and confused. People follow Jesus, a man who lived in the middle east and preached peace and tolerance, but they end up being the most intolerant people I've ever encountered (sometimes). They advise against associating with anyone who is not Christian, and can sometimes even be very racist. Jesus preached about humbleness and self-imposed poverty. In other words, you shouldn't have an excess of wealth. But then there are these mega-churches and millionaire preachers. And don't even get me started on the wackos and extremists. I don't get how they can reconcile that with their faith.

To be fair, this doesn't encompass all Christians. Some are clear about what they believe, and try to live right. Others though....sheesh!

I think the most controversial and most confused religion is Islam because a lot of people think that Muslims are a bunch of terrorists when this is NOT TRUE. Those people are just extremists. Every religion has people that take it to the extreme and people judge muslims as a community for what the terrorists have done when the people judging them know nothing about their religion at all.

I've always wanted to know more about Hindu because everybody I've talked to doesn't know exactly what it is. By the way, the only thing I've heard about it is that there are multiple gods. Other than that I don't know anything about it. I love learning about different religions so I guess that's my next area of study, lol.

Probably satanism. Most satanists aren't even sure what the doctrines are.

But you are quite right in your observations. Hinduism has been used as a cath-all for every crackpot and hippie with an idea to sell for years. Largely because, here in the west, there are very few Hindus to call them liars.

Without clarity of doctrine, a religion can not be organized, without organization, the religion will fail eventually. But I think that "eventually" is a VERY long time, we still have people worshiping the Norse gods, and they were nowhere near as succesful as Hinduism.

Congratulations. You have reached a point where you are willing to admit that your religion can not be taken literally. Many people choose to put their head in the sand rather than face that fact.

The next step is to learn that all religions are culturally meaningful, symbolic metaphors for a larger, deeper truth that can not be expressed in words, but can only be experienced at a soul level.

On a surface level which is where doctrine/dogma prevail, religions/philosophies such as Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam and Hinduism appear very different and sometimes mutually exclusive. However, if the doctrines of any of these religions are viewed in a more general, symbolic way their differences are less. And ultimately you can come to see that they are all conveying the same underlying truth and they are all providing a culturally relevant path to God (yoga).

Most religion, in addition to the regular "exoteric" teachings and meanings (those intended for the masses), also have an "esoteric" branch - a more symbolic, mystic or secret type of teaching/interpretation for those who feel drawn that way. There is esoteric Christianity, Kaballah (in Judaism), sufiism (in islam), etc.

if you're interested look for books and websites that discuss esoteric forms of religion.

good luck

Most Controversial Religion :
By far, Islam. Islam isn't a bad religion, it isn't a violent religion (contrary to popular belief) and it DOESN'T support terrorism. Islam has just been given a bad name by extremists and fundamentalists. The Taliban and Al-Qaeda.
All these groups 'claim" to be Muslim, when in reality, they ARE NOT Muslims, let alone HUMAN BEINGS, and are just giving Islam A BAD NAME

Most Confused Religion : Christianity. I honestly do not understand the Trinity. How can God be mortal? How can God have a son? The Trinity just does not make sense to me

I believe that if you want to believe in a religion, you have to be clear in what you believe in.

Don't you agree?

I agree. If you don't believe in your religion, and you don't know what it preaches, and you are just following the religion because you inherited it from your parents, you are a blind-believer. Religion is a choice. You have to know and AGREE with what you follow. You have to be aware...

Controversial - Christianity.

Confused.... I don't know that sounds a little bit polemic. Every religion has quarrels and denominations. The larger the religion the more denominations. Same with everything. If you have a crowd of 1,000,000, and only two Muslims in that crowd, the Muslims will get along better. But i 999,998 of those people are Muslims, they will find more to disagree on. We see this in animals too. When I had one bird it befriended me, when I had two they befriended each other and disliked me, and now that I have four birds they are like archenemies. They will hang out with one bird but not with the other two.

If there are few people, they will team up. If there are many, they will fight. This is true with religion, politics, war, humanity, animals, everything.

I am classified as a Christian, but I do have my reservations about some of the practices. As you well know religion seperates people, while a relationship with whomever you call God is much better.

I believe that their is only one God,but when you are raised in different enviornments you will fall in line with what is most popular.NO one knows it all,and you must take into consideration that you are subject to human interpretation when following anything.YOu must follow what your heart tells you.We are all equipped with intuition that guides us.We often fail to listen to the signals that our body gives us.

Life can be difficult at times, but you sound like a really well grounded person.Keep your spirits up.
