most of the eastern mediterranean religions practised child-sacrifice. (the bible contains clear suggestions of this among the canaanites and the samaritans particularly).

in societies with no antibiotics or understanding of transmission of infection circumcising an infant is a dangerous procedure. (there are still occasional deaths from circumcision even in modern day america, there are many more in the unmedicalised societies of central africa).

circumcision is child sacrifice lite - you give god an opportunity to kill your boychild, but you don't make it too easy for him.

there is provision even in judaic law that if you have already lost three sons to circumcision complications the fourth need not be snipped. the historical existence of this law reveals what circumcision was always really about.

First of all, Catholics do not believe in circumcision! Second, is the evangelical Protestants who are always bringing up the wrathful god of the OT, not Catholics. And have you never heard of Catholic liberation theology? Here, the teachings of Jesus regarding the poor and oppressed are actually put into practise. Imagine that.

As to female 'circumcision' (should read 'mutilation'), there is no cleanliness issue involved here. From what I have read of it, is a way for men to control female sexuality. Barbaric it is.

God doesn't require circumsision.

However, there are some Middle eastern traditions that became institutionalized by scripture for practical reasons.
Circumsision helps prevent penial infection.

In hot countries, and in an era pre shower gel, cleaning one's penis foreskin daily was not the norm. Men did not wash and go in that area.

As every man knows, failing to wash the penis regularly leads to nasty puss covered infections... Nice...

Other such practical suggestions include covering up women from head to toe. That has nothing to do with female modesty and everything to do with keeping cool (and preventing skin burning) in hot desert conditions.

God hasn't said anything to me about it. Around here we do it only to males and only for cleanliness and to improve overall health.
Some of us believe God works through evolution and this is not a significant enough thing for evolution to have selected for pre-chopped.

Vim,
This was an Old Testament Command to the Israelites and it kept many of them from having genital infections. It is no longer a requirement for GOD'S CHILDREN (Christians). Many have no problem with this today but at that time the conditions were much different and the medical community was not as advanced as we are today. Have a great week.
Thanks,

This is a misconception, God gave to law of circumcision to enter into the covenant of the OT. Jesus said all we have to do is repent and believe to enter into the covenant of the NT.

The Catholic Church follows the traditions of men and the laws of the OT, but they claim to be of the NT.

Jesus said, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Matt 26:27-28

The bread is the Words He spoke, "the Word of God"

Because circumsion is a deliberate, conscious act, and therefore is proof of your deliberate, conscious choice to enroll in this particular religion.
You could likewise argue that God could have created us all perfect, without the urge to sin, if he didn't want us to sin. But that kinda defeats the purpose - He wants us to learn the lesson, to make the right choice on our own, for the right reasons - not because He told us to.

God made a covenant with Abraham that through one of his descendents, the Messiah (ie Jesus) would come. This small cut is nothing compared to the suffering Jesus went through to fulfill that promise. He was tortured under the hands of Pontius Pilate, was crucified and died. He resurrected on the morning of the third day to prove once and for all time that He truly IS who He claimed to be.

So, what's your beef with that? You want to compare bruises? Jesus had a crown made up of thorns thrust onto his head, his beard yanked out, 39 lashes with a cat-o-nine tails, nails driven into his hands and feet against a plank of rough wood (no doubt, with splinters cutting into his back that was already torn up from the 39 lashes), and a sword through his side.

Its a sign of the covenenent of monotheism - the covenent of Abraham

Allah ordered Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to follow the religion of Ibrahim (peace be upon him). When Allah says:

"Then We inspired you: 'Follow the religion of Ibrahim, the upright in Faith'."

(Qur'an 16:123)

And part of the religion of Ibrahim is circumcision.

If you're willing to cut off part of your penis for someone, you TRULY love them. However, very good question. I always wondered why he didn't just create us that way.

Edit: What? Negative responses galore! God wants proof of our faith. Penis chopping is quite a sacrifice. Give me negatives for stating the truth like always!
