You can use a regular DVD player, but you will not benefit from having an HDTV. An upconverting player will be better, and an HD player would be the best. All should work with your home theater system, make sure that it has at least optical, or better would be HDMI.

A regular DVD will have a resolution of 480p (far better than the 480i resolution of CRT TV's) on an HDTV. Your best bet is a HD-DVD player or Bluray player. These next gen players will upconvert standard DVD's to a very crisp resolution. To get the most bang for you buck though, go with a Playstation 3. Not only will it play HD games, but it has a DVD upconverter and plays Bluray discs. Bluray discs display at least 720p but most will be 1080p. You'll get superior quality DVD resolution, high-def movies and a next gen gaming system. The PS3 can essentially become the "brain" of you home entertainment system.

PS3's cost $399. High-def players run between $200 and $500. Upconverting DVD players will cost about $200 also. Go with the PS3.

A regular DVD player will play just fine on your new TV. DVD players come with different features that can result in better pictures on your new TV.

Here's a list of DVD types in order from least picture quality to highest picture quality.

1. Regular DVD player
2. Progressive Scan DVD Player
3. Upconverting DVD player
4. HD DVD or Blu-Ray DVD player.
