'93 Honda Accord LX with 175k miles, timing belt broke. Some say toss the car, some say fix it. Is it worth fixing? If so, how much should I expect to pay?

It all depends on how much damage your engine has suffered. Your car has an engine that is "interference" design.

That means, if the valves aren't properly actuated by the timing belt, the piston will hit it and smash it.

Usually, broken timing belt in interference engine will result in bent valve, but occasionally broken or bent connecting rod (under the piston). Rarely, the broken connecting rod will punch though the block.

I'd say pay the mechanic an hour worth of time and have him evaluate it first. The cost of full repair could be anywhere from mid hundreds to few thousands.

You need a reliable mechanic to determine how much damage was done..I had a similar experience with a Toyota once..it bent a valve..If the car is otherwise pretty fair I would fix it..Honda & Toyota cars run forever if taken care of..They always resell good..save your reciepts

It is an interference engine and is very likely badly damaged. As DarinK says, the outlook is pretty dim. If the car is worth the cost of repair, the easiest way to daylight is to replace the engine with a used one (with 30 day replacement guarantee) from a wrecking yard. Replacing the engine is a medium to advanced do-it-yourself job.

Indeed. Do get it fixed. Hondas are made to last forever. They rock!!!!! Take it to your local Honda dealer. They will know how to fix it correctly. Expect to pay $800. That's nothing compared to the value it truly has. After all, It's a Honda. Good luck.
