While I think the bit about the Crusades is a bit beside the point (it really was too long ago, and it's today's mass media that have really created the situation where any Muslim is regarded as a potential terrorist), I applaud your statement on here. I am astounded that some of the answerers seem to suggest that somehow unless you stop the Al Qaeda/Taliban/terrorist followers, you're somehow complicit.
I wonder why they don't feel that all Christians should be judged by the groups that killed doctors and nurses working in abortion clinics? or any of the other outrages committed by certain groups who claim a Christian basis for their actions. By the same logic, all Christians should have taken responsibility for these outrages. I think this is more relevant than the Crusades.
EDIT: allure45connie, you're right in pointing out that there was some state approval for terrorism in a way there wasn't for the abortion clinic atrocities. However, what I was really trying to get at is that you can't expect moderate Muslims to take responsibility for the lunatic fringe any more than you can expect Christians to take responsibility for THEIR lunatic fringe. If the asker lives in a country which isn't one of the one supporting terrorism, how is s/he meant to exert influence? If s/he lives in a country that DOES support terrorism, I very much doubt there is much opportunity to influence anything. Moderate Muslims HAVE spoken out against terrorism, many times, but they don't get much publicity for their statements. In the UK, they have at times resorted to paying for full-page advertisements in national newspapers to try and get their message across.

I for one, feel I must state my opinion here.
I hold no religious beliefs of my own, but I can see that throughout the course of mankind, religion - and specifically organised reigion at that, has let to suffering, war, and strife. There can be many reasons for this but the main one I do believe is lack of understanding between cultures.
Too often I hear people preaching that their way is the only way, and all non followers forever be damned. That is a trigger point for ill-feeling in itself.
Christianity, Islam, and Judaism - whether you want to accept or not, all base themselves in part around the same events. It's all a matter of interpretaion. Islam acknowleges the existance of Jesus, but not necessarily the significance in the sence christianity does. So you could say that in effect they are all praying to the same God, but the way they do so differs a lot.
So come on, people need to show some understanding and the will to tolerate. Just because a culture is different, it doesnt mean it is evil.

Muslims are hated because they are misunderstood. So many terrorist acts have been done in the name of Ala that it becomes dificult to seperate muslims from extremist.
Christianity isn't any better. People used the name of Christ during the crusades as a reason to rape, kill, and pillage.
Jews, till this day are persecuted by ignorance. You have to understand that there has always been and will always be a certain degree of ignorance.
Can we blame people for the way they feel? I don't know. I believe that we should live & let live. But then again, what do I know.

It is a shame and unfair, I agree.
Your religion deserves the same respect as all the others (yes I do respect religions, although I do not believe any of them and I think they lead to a great waste of human potenital and cause much human suffereing - in the name of god).
I lived in a VERY muslim country for over a year (the only country mentioned in the Koran). People are people everywhere, there are good and decent people and bad ones in all societies, professions and religions.
There is no shortage of christian nut-jobs (just look at some of your responses here), just as there are many islamic fanatics as well. (I think Sam Harris is correct, that religion poisons everything).
Unfortunately for you, America is currently undergoing a christian fundamentalist episode right now, and muslims are the primary recipients of the their vitriolic insanity.
It doesn't help that most muslums are people of color and don't care about NASCAR.
It's a shame, unfair, unjust and just another example of what is wrong with religion.
And by no means an I picking on just christians, there is no shortage of muslim nut cases as well. And it is primarily the muslim fanatics that are flying airplanes into buildings, and suicide bombing innocent civilians after all.
If you can see the idiocy of people using religion in these ways - perhaps, just perhaps, you can see the idiocy of religion in it's entirety.

Osama, al qayeda and taliban are not exterimists nor any muslim is extremist in the world. Some people dont think before blamming somebody if someone name is mohammad or abdullah so he will not be muslim by name no one is muslim by name the defination of muslim is, a person who submits his wills to allah, u are muslim by your deeds not by your name. like hitler kills six million jews so he is not a good person, it is not written in bible that u can kill anybody so thats why hitler kills.
There are some people who dont study quran and hadith well and doing the bad things. All is the work of media, media is not showing the fair image.
If someone say that Muslims are not peaceful so read quran and hadith there is not a single thing that gives the education of terrorism but there are some muslims who dont study quran and hadith well.
Dont go on the spellings may be they are wrong or grammatical mistakes so sorry for it.
Hope answer to the question.

yes. a lot of people have no understanding about other ideologies, other religions and other thoughts without any evidence. they drag everything in filth because they believe in fitting in. they have a frame and they think a picture can never be out of it but some pictures are dancing out of frame. for e.g we as muslims have Sabr as our jewelry but i dont understand the policy of internet makers. how is it possible that they burn the Quran and speak filthy things about our Prophet Muhammad s.a.w and at the same time, in Yahoo Q&A, the reporting against Islam is the favourite sport. and yahoo supports it, youtube supports it..u can imagine, in which world we live in. and u see, us Muslims grow and grow. everyday, one question and answer from me is deleted without any reason. but people are still not happy. we pray Allah s.w.t gives them Hidayah.

I admit not the ones causing the problems only certain 'SMALL' group in the Islamic society but alot of religions have tiny minds and blame every single Muslim for terrorism when as I made very clear it's only a small percentage of the Muslim society but they have given Islam a bad name.

For the record, I do not hate Muslims, and the recent idea that all Muslims are terrorists really bothers me.
I don't judge all Christians by the nuts who blow up abortion clinics, and I don't judge all Muslims by the nuts who did 9/11. People who do so are hateful and ignorant, no matter what their religion.

I don't hate Muslims like you. Actually, I try not to hate anyone.
But I do think that it's the responsibility of Muslims to take care of their own religion, and right now that means not just speaking out, but speaking out louder than any other group, against the Muslims who are presently threatening the safety of the entire world.
For example - I want to see Muslims protesting en masse against their own extremists, not rioting over cartoons and teddy bears.
