People had ethics long before the Bible existed. The Bible did not invent morality.

The Code of Hammurabi is far older, and has many points in common with the Christian Ten Commandments.

Besides, certain morals are instincts that help the species survive. Don't kill because it's counter-productive, don't steal because it makes you disliked by society (thus limiting your reproduction chances), don't rape because it makes you hated by society (see previous note).
Also, basic human compassion is an instinct. Only sociopaths and psychopaths lack that quality.

And anyway, which is more moral? Not doing bad things because you feel empathy toward others, or not doing bad things because you're scared of being punished forever?

I'm not even an atheist, but I've always avoided doing certain things because I'm just not inclined toward hurting people. Anyone who is - *ahemFredPhelpsahem* - needs to check in to a mental hospital.

Oh My God!! Nobody told me I needed ithecs to be an athiest!

Seriously, I'm a good person because it makes me feel good to do the right thing and not because I'm afraid I'll go to hell if I don't. There are plenty of "Christians" that have no ethics. It really irritates me that some people assume that because you don't believe in god, you must be some kind of immoral ogre.

Ethics are generally universal across all people/religions. One simply has to be a human to conceptualize the general ethical issues. Since we are all human, we all have a start.

After that, religion is used to add some shading to the gray areas. Religion, however, is not the only way to develop ethics.

This is really a philosophical question that has been discussed at length.

You mean "Ethics"?

Those of us who have them (not everyone does), probably pull them from some version of the "Golden Rule"

"Treat others as you would have them treat you"

The thing about Atheists is that since there is no overriding book to rely on, our ethical codes may vary from person to person

People had morals long before your storybook was written. And if you don't know right from wrong on your own by age ten...

Well, I would get checked for autism.

Where do religious fanatics get their intolerance for Realists and call them "Atheists"?
What ever happened to the religious saying, "live and let live"?
