can i use any product key on any windows xp cd

No it doesn't work like that.
The product key is for your specific software, meaning if they choose, they can stop updates and go so far as make your software innoperable, if they find it to be Pirated, It happens everyday with pirated Microsoft Software. The Old days of burning a copy and giving it to someone else because they don't have it are quickly coming to an end.
Several of the high dollar software manufactures are now using this to stop the pirate's.
If your software is legit then contact Microsoft and they will make things right, however if it isn't , well thats another issue isn;t it.

It depends, some keys work for certain hardware configurations if it's an OEM copy and key. If it's a retail copy and key then it should work on any retail copy of XP, also it depends on if it's home or PRO

No, it won't work! That is why they created a product key.
