Sorry but the country in which your ethnic back round is from has more illegal residents here than legal. It's sad really, you have to deal with persecution and accusations for being a Mexican American. The only thing I can say is help. Help us defend our borders and voice your views on illegal immigration. It negatively effects us all, in your case it's a little more personal and close to home.
You may now be viewed as a illegal by others when they don't even know you.
For that I am sorry and those assumptions should be motivation enough for you to stand up and not tolerate it any more.
Stand up and fight now, so your children will not experience the same treatments you are.

Everyone assumes you are illegal simply because you aren't speaking/acting/dressing the way they WANT you to speak/act/dress. And so what if you can't speak english too well? That doesn't mean you are illegal. My mom speaks a little bit of English, and my dad speaks it well, but with an accent, that doesn't make them illegal.
And theres no way of acting "American". And why should anyone WANT to act American? Theres no need for assimilation.
A lot of people just don't like Mexicans, and assume everyone, if not most are illegal.

It sucks that people treat you that way if you are indeed an american citizen.

Perhaps like others have said the accent maybe? the way of dress could be. color of skin?

Sadly many of the illegals are coming here from Mexico so it is the first htought on the mind.

Just keep correcting them and help us protect yours and my country from these invaders.

You write english better then some others on these boards so I would have never even thought it.

It doesn't matter what people think about you. Some people are just ignorant and believe that you can't be "American" if you look a certain way. That also apply's to Asian-American, Arab-Americans and anyone who looks different. I know this Chinese-American girl who's always asked what "part of China she's from" and that makes her angry because she's an American!
As long as you know what you are, who cares what these ignorant idiots think. And like someone said Latinos have been in the southwest longer than most anyone else, that's why there's so many cities with Spanish names. Just be proud!!

I am sorry to hear that. I am Mexican and does not happen. Maybe you have an accent or the way you dress? I do not want to be offensive but people can be too judgmental and you most likely are just fine. Do not worry of what they think as long as you are OK.

that sucks..see this is kind of a reason too..because ..many many Mexican illehal or legal immigrants keep coming and people get too lazy to learn the English language...its cool to know your native language ..just at least make an effort to learn the language correctly

Do you have an accent? If you do, that's probably your problem. If you don't, I think you're overgeneralizing the few people that thought you were illegal as most people.

Many people are idiots. Most of those people think that all Latinos are not only illegal, but Mexican as well. There was that one incident that made news not too long ago, where this one guy was stopped and picked up by INS they questioned him about where he grew up but, because he had a developmental disability, he was unable to explain things about where he came from and the schools he went to when he was growing up. His parents found out they deported him, when he called them collect from Mexico. He was born in the U.S. to two U.S. citizens.

I think it depends on your english. If you struggle with the language people will assume you are a Mexican national (legal or illegal).

You're around people who still has the accent and speak your language.........who gives a crap about what people think. I hate people when they start guessing your nationality....just simply ask what my nationality is and I will tell you....easy right?
