My first job? Ski lift attendant at about 8.00/hr. It wasn't the money I was after though. I just wanted to free season pass and a guarenteed 4 runs every day on the slopes when I was working. Gotta have fun or all the work is for nothing.

My first job was as a cashier at Kresge's, forerunner of K-Mart. I got 90 cents an hour - but that was in 1961.

My first professional job was in 1964 as a high school full time science teacher - I made $4200 that school year.

Times have changed - and of course so have prices. The Chevelle convertible I bought new in 1964 cost something like $2600, and gas was 20-some cents a gallon.

First adult job was an internship, $1000/month and I was floored when the take home pay was only $720. Federal I knew about; state I knew about, but city tax and fica/mc were new to me (on campus college jobs don't withhold fica/mc). Paid monthly.

Second adult job was $24000/yr, paid semi-monthly.
Third adult job was paid bi-weekly.

Once you get used to it, biweekly is best. You have to budget as if you are paid 2 paychecks a month (February is short!), but then the 13/26th ones pop as free money in the summer and at Christmas.

As for pay, know your market. If 24K is what the going rate is for entry level jobs, research the potential for job advancement. The days of 30% pay raises are long gone.

(If you want really good pay, it's called sales and commissions. Those people earn the money but they have to work for it!)
