I have personally read the Bible cover to cover. It took me 12 days... and I found it immensly helpful to put everything together in my mind like that. A lot of things made sense that previosly I had not put together.
However, you must make it a part of your regular life. A daily Bible (one where you can read the whole thing in a year) usually puts a little part of the old testiment, with a little part of the new.
There is wisdom in every sentence, and it is best to take it on little by little. We do not so quickly and easily digest the wisdom in the Word of God.
Slow and steady.
God Bless You.

The best place to start is where ever the Spirit of God leads you.
I started reading Proverbs first because it has 31 chapters and most of the months are 31 days so I would read it by the dates. This is how my dad taught us to read. My mom taught us from the beginning (Genesis) when we were children. We read through the Bible from beginning to end and would began over again until we moved out or became of age.
Even though I've read through the Word, I still don't have a complete understanding of it. That is why it is called the Living Word of God. You can't comprehend it all in this life. It's an instructional book on life-past, present, and future events.
Dig in and enjoy. It's some mind blowing things in there that will make you cry, laugh, puzzle you and down right hit a nerve. Believe me, it makes a believer out of you! And every Word of it is true that's why men don;t take to it. Men are lovers of darkness rather than light because we are sinner and like dark or crooked things! (John 3:19)
The Bible was written by Prophets and Disciples of old but they were inspired by God to write them. Read John 1:1-5, 1Thes.1:5-6.

The books of the New Testament were not written in the same order by which they appear in the Bible. An exact chronological order for the books of the New Testament is impossible at this time. The opinions of scholars vary greatly on the books of the New Testament. The gospel of John for example has been dated all the way into the second century A.D. Most conservative scholars put date the writing of the Book of John to about 85 A.D. and many scholars believe it was earlier.
Pray to God for his Spirit to guide you for in the letter is death and you will not understand a thing.....

Starting in the New Testament is a good idea. You can also get a Bible reading schedule from a Church. This will tell you to read some frome the New and some from the Old each day. You'll finish in about a year. Good way to do it. Good Luck

The bible can be very exciting to read if you have fun with it. My daughter and I are reading the bible together as our quiet times with God. It's great because we started with the book of John in the New testament. We're reading one chapter a day. Then we look at the gospel of John on DVD

My daughter was so excited to see the words in the bible come alive. She said, "Wow, we just read when Jesus said that." So it's a great tool to help you read along.
Also, my daughter has a children's bible too and she reads the old testament stories in there and loves them because it talks about all the great things that God did for his people!
Welp, what I would say to you is to first start off with the new testament and fall in love with jesus and what he did for you. Then after you complete the NT you can move on to the OT for the history of why Jesus was sent from God in the first place.

I personally read John Maxwell books, example I am reading the 21 most powerful minutes in a leaders day currently. It is related to the bible and helps me understand better the bible. I dont think that you must read the bible in any order, but do more than read it, study it. The bible was not meant to read as literal.

short and to the point:
It is easier if you start from the New Testament. Just start from Matthew and continue on, and then get into the Old Testament. The important part is that you read the Bible regardless of the order.

Listen to the Bible in 24 hours and you will get it...

After that, read the New Testament all you want and you will get more out of it accordingly.
Just remember that if you want to read Hebrews or Revelation, you will need a firm grasp of the Old Testament.

I would be sure and read John and Romans in the
New Testament. It just has so much meat in it for
us today, whereas the Old Testament tells us about
the history (His Story) of how it all began and how
the people rebelled and did evil. Jesus came to earth
to tell us how to live and how to love, and that comes
in the New Testament. If you like history, then be sure
and read the Old Testament at a later time.

I know that I am going to hear from this but I would recommend "THE MESSAGE" it is an easier read especially for the first time. There are also parallel version that can help you understand a little easier.
