Don't some attorney's cross over. Like they start out as a prosecutor and cross over to defenses. Or they start out as defense attorney and cross over as prosecutor? What drives them to cross over?

This occurs a lot. Private attorney's can make much more $ than a prosecutor.

I work with several attorneys every week that are now public defenders and private attorneys (they do both at the same time - they typically make $300 for each felony case they are appointed to by the judge for indigent people) - and they were previously prosecutors.

By taking some of the public cases - people who CAN afford an attorney and see them in the ct room quite often hire them as well.

Quite often it comes down to the money.

It happens. Not a big deal. Money or the desire to work in a different environment is usually the driving factor.

And to whoever said that Public Defenders make a lot of money.......WOW are you ever wrong. They are employed by the County just like the DA's. The pay is not based on amount of work or caseload and is on a scale just like any other Govt job.

MONEY
USUALLY THERE FIRST JOB. YOU GET OUT OF LAW SCHOOL, WILL BE WITH THE PROSECUTORS OFFICE. IT PAYS A LITTLE WITH BENEFITS.
PUBLIC DEFENDERS CAN GET HUGE AMOUNTS FOR CASES. IF YOU WERE A PROSECUTOR, THEN CROSSED OVER, YOU KNOW THE LOOP HOLES, HAVE CREDABILITY AS A PROSECUTOR, CAN NEGOTIATE AWAY A CASE TO NOTHING FOR CLIENT, MAY NEVER HAVE TO GOT TO COURT FOR A TRIAL PLEA BARGAINING.
