An approximate figure is 3,750 Calories = 1 pound of body fat.
The Calories required to maintain you current weight can be estimated by multiplying your body weight times 15 to 17. Assume you weight 140 and are moderately active-
140 lbs x 16 = 2240 Calories. If you consumed only 120 calories that day you would have a Calorie deficit of 2120 Calories (2240 - 120). That Calorie deficit would equal 0.57 pounds of body fat (2120 / 3750 = 0.565).

You would observe a higher weight loss because your body's water content (which is about 80%) would change slightly due to the diet change. Remember that 80% of 140 lbs is 112 pounds of water and small changes in the 80% figure can make big changes in body weight.

Fat is 3500 calories per pound.

Exercise does not burn as many calories as restricting the calories in your diet will. Basically an hour of vigorous cardio burns about the number of calories in a large snickers bar; half an hour burns the number in a can of coke. This varies by person of course, but not much.

You probably want to get a "basal metabolic" test done to see how many calories you burn just by sitting around doing nothing. You need to figure that into the mix.

A lot of dieticians, gyms and wellness-related businesses will do this sort of thing for free as a way of sizing up prospects for new business. Take advantage of it when you can.

Good luck!

Each gram of fat provides 9 calories. So if you exercise and burn 120 calories you are using up 13 1/3 grams of fat.

You have to eat to lose weight. If you starve yourself your body will store fat. Take about 500 calories out of your current food intake and exercise. Too many calorie restrictions and your body will store fat.

You will lose approximately a pound or two of muscle. Your fat will be stored by the body since no food came in, the body goes into "emergency mode" so it starts shedding muscles.

No one knows how much weight in fat a calorie translate into. Different studies provide different hypothetical estimates.

3500 calories, generally, is one pound lost or gained.
