why is it you do this? why dont you guys read to understand rather than read to say you read it?

i always see these, "read the bible in a year" guides and what not.

why limit yourself, and not simply read to understand it?

For once, I agree with you
(actually, it may be the 2nd time this year)

I read little by little every day in order to absorb & understand it......not to rush through it

What a silly question! Its like asking; "Why limit college courses to a semester, why not let me take all the time I want so I understand it". The reason for the "Read the Bible in a year" guides is to give people an incentive and method to read it. A year is the suggested time, it is not just "to say you have read it". People have been reading the Bible for centuries and still don't understand all of it.

People do both. There are mainly two types of reading: devotional and study.

The time limit things (in a year, 10 minutes a day, whatever) is to get some discipline in doing the reading. I read through the Bible is 7 months - it was great. I got really interested in how the Prophets related to the History books, when things were written, the history...all sorts of stuff.

So...even reading through in a year can stimulate study.

It's not a requirement/constraint. It's a guideline or suggest for setting a goal. Many people, yes, even Christians, don't spend much time reading the Bible on their own, and this is something to keep them on track. Of course, for those who are able to discipline themselve to true study for understanding, great.

Well im going to talk just for me cus not all christians have the same views about certaion things. Personall i do read it to understand it but life is crazy and usually reading the bible isnt a top priority in my life. So if I put a time limit on it will help me stay focused on the goal me, keeps me committed, and helps me not forget to read it. I could just read it when i remember and finish it after a few years but i want to be enlightened and closer with god now. But patience is a virtue so who knows. . . christians arent perfect

Religion came up with the daily bible reading and going to church 3 times a week. Being a believer has nothing to do with those rituals. The Bible makes no mention of reading or how often to attend church. Nowadays you have to realize there will be ritualism in any religion especially Christianity. Paul talks about the simplicity that is Christ. It's people that make the walk with Christ an impossible hardship. Keep it simple and you will be more fulfilled than you could be through any amount of ritualism.

The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. For this reason I read the bible at will and am on no "1 year" or any other schedule. I also listen to the bible in my vehicle on CD everyday.

People should read at their own pace, of course. I simply can't imagine how it would take anyone a year (or six months) to read *any* book, though. Honestly, a year? Even if one were to read all of the annotations and footnotes in an annotated Bible, it shouldn't take months...

why do you not wear brown shoes with black slacks? your question is really not pertinent in that those guidelines for reading the Bible in one year are just that, a guideline nothing more or less. I agree you should take your time and read and learn and absorb Gods word, and in time what is really cool is that God will really open up His word and bring it to life for you and give you more and more insite to its meanings, then you will crave the time you get to spend studying and praying. So don't get hung up on a guideline, that is all it is.

I have never heard of anyone putting a time on reading the bible. How silly!!! People should read to learn from it, not just to get it over with.

Sometimes these guides are to help you read the bible on a regular basis. Thankfully there aren't any deadline police waiting for me if I don't complete it on time
