Note to the boobs on this thread:
The U.S. doesn't have an official language....
English is the NATIONAL language....big, big difference.
"Official" means everyone MUST speak it...National means that it is the language of commerce here.
You cannot have an "official" language in a country like ours with our diversity.

You're right.- But although the United States has no official language at the federal level, English is the national language
Though there have recently been several bills brought to Congress to make English the official language of the USA.
However, Hawaii has declared its official state languages to be English and Hawaiian. New Mexico has declared English and Spanish as its official languages. In Puerto Rico, the official languages are English and Spanish, In Louisiana the official language is English and French. etc.
Language is an amazing thing. To many it's a means of dominance. A way to be a superpower internationally.
Yankees want to keep on being a world power, they sense their going down the drain. ( Because of overburdening their economy with overspending, weapons and war activates )
Instead of complaining about languages they should start doing something about their economy that is on the brink of disaster or collapse.
FLY, The main reason why 12% of the population speak Spanish as a first or second language is because the current USA owns Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Florida, California, etc that once belonged to Spain and/or Mexico.
Spanish speaking immigrants were there first .

Arrogance, pride, The Master Race ( they cannot humiliate themselves by talking the lowly language called Spanish, which is the language of the serfs, the illegals, the nonwhite )
By the way, I sure feel sorry for all those magnificent people that say you must learn english, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.
As a matter of fact, we speak english. Perhaps not so good, but according to what I have seen here, I would dare to say that not worse than those born here
Bottom line, with the increase of the Spanish speaking population in the USA, the globalization, and some other facts, it is getting more and more necessary to speak Spanish to get a job and maaany other important things.
If you refuse to learn Spanish, so sorry. Go back to England

If I have been living in a country all my life and the large majority of people that I deal with on a day-to-day basis speak English, why should I have to take time out of my schedule to learn to Spanish, when those who speak it make no effort to learn to communicate with us? They are in a country where English is spoken. I should not have to learn their language. They should learn to speak mine. When and if I want to go to Mexico, I will make the effort to speak the language that they speak. But when they are here, they should speak what we speak.

Too bad theres A LOT of people who can't communicate in English correctly, when they're the ones complaining. And, why should everyone be focred to speak ONE language, when they should learn more than one.

I agree with you somewhat. If I were in another country I wouldn't expect them to speak English to me. I would be smart enough to learn their language. Remember the saying When In Rome Do As The Romans Do ! And by the way. Mexican and Spanish are two different Languages. The Mexicans seemed to screw that one up too.

easily this has already been desperate?. quickly after the announcement of independence Congress mentioned a action to alter the language of the U. S. to something different than that of the hated colonial capacity. One suggestion grow to be to undertake Greek, the language of the inventors of democracy. an selection grow to be to choose for an considerable Indian language. fairly much each congressman curiously thought the replace grow to be a sturdy thought (in spite of each thing they desperate to rigidity on the best out of the comparable anti-British sentiment), yet they could no agree on their selection. So, as no longer something grow to be resolved, the present situation grow to be reluctantly familiar by skill of default. easily that failure to alter it, meant that English remained legally the expert language of the hot usa? I seem to remember whilst i grow to be examined for my citizenship, no longer in basic terms grow to be the examination carried out in English notwithstanding it secure a try of my understanding of that language. Is that no longer adequate information that English is definitely the expert language of the U. S.?

English is the de facto official language. Anyone who doesn't speak English is at an economic, social, and educational disadvantage. That's enough for me.
Can you shop in Korean-only, Spanish-only, Chinese-only places? Sure. But that's not sufficient.
What is becoming a de facto second language in this country is Spanish. Witness the multiple TV channels in Spanish. Sure, my cable also carries programming in German, Russian, and even Romanian. But Spanish channels are the biggest money-makers after English.
And I gotta admit, I'm finding a non-sequitur thing here- if people immigrate, they likely don't speak English. But it's better for them if they learn English.
No flames, please. Flaunt your ignorance elsewhere.

The Consitution of the United States of AMerica is written in English.
Enough said.
Because if someone is too stupid to understand the implications of THAT, then all the words in the world in any language won't cure their stupidity.
