BEFORE YOU SAY YES OR NO... please specify whether or not you had a numbing gel prior to the injection... and how much it helped, or didn't help. All of my siblings say that it completely took the pain away.

I've had over a dozen novocaine shots and every single one of them hurt.

They do put a numbing gel that is supposed to numb the area where you will receive the injection. The numbing gel itself tastes AWFUL and I'm not sure it helps all that much.

I'd have to say novocaine shots are probably one of the more painful shots I've ever had- and I've had a lot. They made my eyes water every time, and since they go into tissue that's pretty tough it makes it worse. The most painful shot is in the back of the jaw (I think) and the very front.

Are they worth it? I've had a filling worked on without novocaine and I'd say- YES. It's uncomfortable and painful but it's over quickly. It takes about 10 minutes to work, but it works beautifully. Your mouth will be numb in that area for hours.

It feels funny, your lips will feel fat and "stupid" afterwards because you can't feel anything on that side so it's hard to eat or drink. In fact, for that reason they recommend you don't try to eat or drink because you will likely bite something and know about it later.

I hope I haven't scared you away from it- it is some discomfort but in the long run, much less than NOT having the shot so I'd go for it.

Best of luck and Happy New Year!

The "numbing gel" as you call it, numbs the injection site prior to the insertion of the needle. If the dentist is skillful, the injection that follows SHOULD NOT HURT. If the dentist is NOT skillful, it can hurt like crazy. It is all about TECHNIQUE.
If your dentist routinely hurts you when freezing, find a new dentist. It does not have to hurt.

Every one I've ever gotten hurt like hell - but then I've never had a dentist use the gel, so I can't say how well it works.

It does not hurt. I had all of my wisdom teeth taking out without being out to sleep. Simply by using novacane. I even had one shot into the roof of my mouth. It is all about techinque, its just a pinch.
