The Viet Cong were the Popular Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam rised and operating within South Vietnam until the destruction of their movement as a result of their involvement in the Tet Offensive of 1968 when they creased to exist as a fighting force. It was an irregular military formation and was not related to the North Vietnamese Army other than for the supply of weapons, ammunition and explosives.

The North Vietnamese Army was the regular military forces of the Demoncratic Republic of North Vietnam, they mounted regular military operation from North Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia into Vietnam prior to Tet, 1968 and then following Tet they were the only force opposing the Army, Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) and its Western allies.

The enemies full name was Viet Conc. The military loves acronyms so it became V.C. The military also loves the phonetic alphabet. V.C. in the phonetic alphabet is Victor Charlie which was shortened to "Charlie"

The GIs always give some sort of name to most anything. Charlie was easy to say and remember other than that no special reason. Examples are jets were called fast movers, helo gun ships (one type) was called a snake rather than a cobra, rescue cover aircraft were usually called sandy flights
