My yellow headed amazon ate a piece of chocolate the size of light switch or small screw. Is this going to kill him or hurt him?

A lot depends upon what type of chocolate it was. If it was milk chocolate, the actual percentage of cocao is small, therefore less dangerous. If it was dark chocolate, semisweet, or high cocao chocolate , the danger is much more severe!
Regardless of the type, I would call and Avian Vet and consult with him to see if you should take him in to the Vet, because chocolate CAN kill a bird. Just because a particular bird eats a small piece and survives, does not mean that your bird will be that lucky!!

Call the VET NOW.
Good luck!

Once my rainbow lorikeet found a chocolate chip and started to eat it. I tried to grab it off him and I have never seen him hold onto food so tightly and eat so fast so that I wouldn't get it. He must have really liked it. o__o

I gave him a heap of water to drink (although it probably didn't do anything to help.. they have very different anatomy to us) and kept a close eye on him.

Nothing happened, he continued to act normal, was fine. That was several months ago.

While chocolate can be dangerous, it is more dangerous depending on the circumstances. It can depend on the quantity, the health of your bird (technical stuff... can't remember now).. same with onions too.

Keep a close eye on him and call the vet if he shows any abnormal behaviour at all. Or if you are really worried, call the vet straight away.
The only reason I didn't call the vet was because my dad grabbed the phone and wouldn't let me ring and kept calling me a "stupid idiot" (nice, isn't he T_T ).

Good luck.

EDIT: John P is right, while my bird and other birds may have survived eating chocolate (or avacado or alcohol, etc), certainly does not mean it is safe and doesn't mean your bird won't be affected. Be very careful with your amazon and don't let your guard down. ;)

I wouldn't stress about it. One of my ringnecks eats anything from chocolate, potato chips and my jim beam mixed with coke. I've found small doses of anything are ok.Just keep it small.

As far as I recall choclate has no ill effects on birds only cats and dogs and only if its pure choclate and they are allergic.
