Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression of the median nerve of the wrist: http://content.answers.com/main/content/img/galeNeurology/gend_01_img0029.jpg

The "carpal tunnel" is literally a tunnel the median nerve passes through. Repetitive movements of the wrist and hand can narrow that tunnel, causing great pain.

If your symptoms are still mild, you may be able to treat them with exercise as in the following:

Carpal tunnel/median nerve pain should not be ignored. I have seen several carpal tunnel surgeries that helped in the (very) long run, but the surgery is painful and the healing time is long.

you can change the way you rest your hand and wrists. by an urgonomic keyboard and mouse. You said you have a new pad but it may be the way you are holding and resting your hands and wrists. check into those types of things. Get a wrist brace that has metal in it so the wrist stays in one location while in the resting mode.

if all else fails, see your doc.

sounds like you have some form of carpel tunnel. Check with your dr.
Hey I have the same problem. I had to have surgery on both of my hands! Didn't mean to be a downer, but its better to get it checked out now & get ahead of it before its too late!

Is your keyboard at the proper height? [ lower than desk top ]
Is your chair at correct height to desk/keyboard?
Seen a doctor? You could wear wrist splints if necessary.
