Last night I had a strange dream. Actually I remember only the part where I was holding a Cobra by its hood (mouth) to avoid getting bitten and was shouting for help. I woke up before I could get any help, feeling greatly disturbed. I am not particularly fond of snakes and we do see them in our colony during monsoon. I would just go my way, we don't even kill them.
Some say seeing snakes is not a good omen. What could it mean? Anyone???

Cobra's are revered in Hindu culture but I don't care for them much except that I'm fascinated by them.

Great answers, all of them. I thank you all for your efforts in providing invaluable insight...
Lucitania365: Yes, snakes are beautiful and fascinating, yet dangerous too! In India we have a class of snake charmers who are experts in handling snakes & get the snakes(Cobras) to dance to the tune of their 'BEEN', a musical instrument. Then there are those who can remove snake venom from victims body by chanting 'Mantras'. All this may appear unbelievable to people of the West but their power is something to be seen to believe. We may be losing all this traditional wisdom in the name of modernisation. But our Land is full of mystery & strange knowledge!!!
Many many thanks to my good friend, , for his kind words. His knowledge is simply phenomenal. There's no topic under the sky (& above it) that he can't grapple with. You are fascinating too (in a benign way, of course)...
Solomon is naturally intuitive, I'm absolutely certain...

It could mean a number of things, and cobras could have specific cultural significance for you....what country are you writing from, and do you know if the cobra has any particular cultural or spiritual symbolism there, apart from apparently being accepted as a normal part of life where you are?
Snakes can be representative of problems that are worrying you, depending on what kind of snake and it's actions, could also represent a person who means you ill. In some dreams, depending on the context and actions, a snake can also be a positive symbol of wisdom, regeneration, and growth. Cobra, as a specific kind of snake, is associated with creativity though, but in this dream it doesn't sound like that. The local cultural significance of Cobras doesn't seem to have anything to do with this either...
You're holding a venomous snake by the mouth.
Sounds like someone around you is a bad gossip, or uses words as weapons.
Perhaps this person is very creative in the use of his/her words (cobra) With that thought in mind, sounds like a very manipulative person.......
You wish to avoid being bitten.
Sounds like you have concerns about things this person says about others, maybe friends or family have been "bitten" by this person, and you have concerns this person could bite you, too.
You're shouting for help.
Your concerns about this person are causing stress, and you shout to relieve the stress, also because you feel need to communicate to others this snake is among them.
You awake before help can arrive, so we have no way of knowing if your concerns have been heard...

Seeing a snake (specially a venomous cobra) in your dream could mean a multitude of different things and their manifold permutations. It could imply - in a Rumi-like interpretation, for instance - that your "nafs" (i.e. the hidden false ego within, often tormented by conflicting sexual tensions) is working against you, your creativity, and your spiritual freedom. It could also signal a moment of transformation on the eternal cycle of life, death and rebirth. According to Gillian Holloway, for example, "people who are dying or who have lost a loved one often dream of snakes, at or near the time of death. For whatever reason, these dreams seem involved with the psychic awareness of the transition from this life to the next...." Likewise, Carl Jung sees the snake as a kind of "mediation between earth and heaven." On the other hand, and perhaps not surprisingly, the biblical interpretation of the snake has always been that of an evil or phallic symbol.
But although I’m not privy to the details of your personal life, think in this case, it is a representation of the sum total of inner frustrations, longings, and insecurities; acutely intensified by Grandma Param's deteriorating health, the venomous disease that is eating away at her being, violent fanaticism that is the current reality of the world, and your ongoing emotional/spiritual struggle with loved ones, family members, and the environment around you. I also think the fact that you did not see the dream through to the end lends additional support to the hypothesis that you are subconsciously fearful of the potentially unpleasant outcome of an upcoming event which you consider to be beyond your immediate control. That said, in the final analysis it is YOU, and YOU alone, who can determine what that cobra truly means within the global boundaries and overall context of the day-to-day reality of your life.
My Precious Momma Param, for some time now, I have felt your profound inner pain and have witnessed the rollercoaster that’s your suffering and delicate heart. But I've also been touched by your incredible inner strength, your capacity for love, and your intuitive, intellectual & spiritual force. I am certain whatever it is that you are grappling with emotionally/spiritually, in the end, you will be able to transform it into an opportunity for personal growth; so is the unfolding path of all loving and decent human beings. The rest is just "Dust in the Wind". … And please remember: There are many of us here, who deeply and genuinely care about you and your continued happiness and prosperity.

From the web:
To see a snake or be bitten by one in your dream, signifies hidden fears and worries that are threatening you. Your dream may be alerting you to something in your waking life that you are not aware of or that has not yet surfaced. The snake may also be seen as phallic and thus symbolize dangerous and forbidden sexuality. The snake may also refer to a person around you who is callous, ruthless, and can't be trusted. As a positive symbol, snakes represent transformation, knowledge and wisdom. It is indicative of self-renewal and positive changes.
I think that the fact that you were holding the snake so that it did not bite you indicates that you will stop the person (if it is a person) in your waking life from doing any more harm and alert the authorities.

Have you ever thought of interpreting holding a Cobra by its hood in your dream as exactly that of holding a Cobra by its mouth in your dream and nothing else? Sometimes we dream with the objects, people and animals that we fear.
I am privileged to live in Australia where poisonous snakes are abundant and I am always searching for them when I walk in the forests.
Forget about people who say that seeing snakes is not a good omen; nonsense. Snakes are beautiful animals that deserve to be treated with respect and not with superstitious fears, whether in dreams or in the real life.
Take care.

Your dream represents a situation in your life.. You are living in a state in time where you are handling what you need to, however, you don't know how long you can continue.. You may be encountering people who are in contrast with you, or are trying to use or take advantage of you.. You realize this and that the fact you are holding the snake in a position of strength, means you still are in control of the situation.. Someone in your life is trying to control ,you, manipulate you or possibly influence you or your life.. YOU are sub-consciously aware this is taking place, and are fighting it.. Down deep, your afraid you can't last or continue to keep on repelling this negative in your life.. If you can, distance yourself from this influence, as soon as you can.. Take heart in the fact , you are very strong mentally,, and will triumph in the end.. This could effect you emotionally the longer it continues... GOOD LUCK!!! SOLOMON

Snakes are symbolic of deceit, lies, and deceptions. Your dream means that you are trying to get a handle or control of a powerful deception. And the snake trying to bite you back represents you feeling the pressure or attack of dealing with this deception.
