Take a piece of paper towel, roll it up tightly , place it on the cut and quickly put on a band aid. This is a pressure bandage.Make sure the tip of your finger does not turn purple, and do not leave the pressure bandage on for long. To check it, gently peel the bandage back, and peek..if it is still bleeding , apply for another 15 Min's.
IF it continues to bleed through after 30 minutes...a constant drip, not an ooze..go get some stitches.

The basic idea for any acute injury like that is RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation).
Rest means stop using the injured body part. Ice will reduce pain and swelling. Compression means put pressure on the wound with a clean dressing (or in an emergency with your hand), and elevation means that if you can, raise the part well above the heart. (the extra height will mean that you will bleed slower and in the case of a finger thats easily achieved and will help slow the blood flow)
If the cut is excessively long, deep or gets infected see a doctor.

how deep is it?
put pressure just below the cut and it should slow down in a minute or two. If its gushing go to emergency.. but if its bleeding slowly it takes time to get the blood to clot.

I was always told to hold it above your heart......not sure if that works or not...........Apply pressure to it, this will help to stop bleeding, but don't take anything with aspirin in it, as it is a blood thinner and will make you bleed worse!

direct pressure. elevation. once bleeding is stopped, wash in mild soap and water, dry, then use a topical antibiotic like neosporin and use a bandaid to protect it.
