Religion is an excuse. The real reason is greed, politics, and misunderstandings.

Far more people -- millions upon millions -- have been killed in the name of political systems -- for example Communism and Nazism -- than in the name of any religion.
Stalin, a Communist, killed approximately 20 million of his own people. Communism by the way is officially atheistic and has as one of its stated goals the elimination of religion.
By contrast the Inquisition killed, at the very most, maybe 40,000 people, and this was over the course of several centuries.

In the name of religion...that is quite a different thing than saying that people of faith are doing the killing.
There are dishonest people who use religion for their own ends...mainly for power.
Now, I can't talk about what other religions teach or do not teach....but these sorts of tactics are diametrically opposed to the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Christians are commanded by our Lord and our God to love one another...even our enemies...and we are further commanded that, as far as it is within our power, we are to be at peace with those around us. If there are folks using Christ's Name as a reason to kill, they are not obeying His commands...therefore, it is not right or fair to blame Him...OR to blame His disciples who ARE trying to follow His teachings.
I hope you can see the difference...

There are more people killed in the name of power if you realize it. Religion is just a sub key to the nature of power.

Some people derivatize words to achieve their own cheap goals, and keep crying that they are doing it for their religion...
like the Qa'eda and the whole gang, who clame that they are killing innocents for the name of Islam, while the Quan was vry clear when ALLAH ordered us not to kill innocents, that killing one soul is like killing all humanity, a major sin leading 2 hell.

People murder each other for a lot of reasons...all it takes is a little rationalization. "Better them than us." "They have something we want, and they won't part with it willingly." Just add "It's the will of God" to the list.
