A lot of people wait to have children in order to make sure that they have the opportunity to have lots of experiences early in life that having children would prohibit them from doing. While years ago people waited until they retired to travel the world, people are doing that kind of thing early in life, and saving the kid days for later. People often feel that later in life they are more financially capable of raising a family. They save up, pay off the house, etc, then they can afford for one parent to stay home and take care of a baby. I had a child at 20. I had to work full time, put her in daycare, etc. It was difficult, but I am am so greatful for the opportunity to know my beautiful daughter. She is eight now. I am planning on having another child sometime in the near future and things are definitely different this time. The financial stress is not so much of a factor this time around. I also feel like I will be a more confident parent (not that I wasn't confident before, but it gets easier the more you do it...).
As for those who just never have kids, some people just aren't into it, and I applaud those who know themselves well enough to say "I don't want to take on such a responsibilty" and then stick to it. The worst thing ever is have a kid and then resent the child because you weren't ready to be a parent.

Gererations ago, the costs of college were not thought about when raising children. Today, finances have changed so much so couples are finding it more important to establish themselves in the work force before having kids. Also, people are living longer today, so when women would become pregnant at 30 in 1960, it was like being pregnant at 40 now.

children cost a lot .. they take up a lot of time.. its takes aways from time the couple used to have together ...puts a strain on many lives... i love kids though .. i have a daughter and im having a son in may .. you need patience.. im not married yet but my man and i spend a lot of time together .. well go out with my daughter and when we need a break .. we ask grandma for help .. its hard when your young cuz there is so much you want to do . and you cant always do things you want to with a kid ..
i think people hold off now because money is tight and because people dont commit themselves like they used to ..divorce rate now is very very high compared to the past

Traditional roles are falling away as people realize that they can make choices in their lives - that they actually don't have to do what society expects, but can, instead do what makes them happy.
This is a good thing. Our world population is too high, anyway. And, this way, more & more kids will have parents who *want to be parents* and do it carefully, thoughtfully & joyously - leading to a nicer generation to follow.

A generation amounts to roughly 30 years. That would place your argument at about the year 1978. Hardly the age of "Leave It To Beaver".
That's as much as I'm going to help you. Good luck on your paper.

For the love of Christ...........I am a baby boomer and I get so sick of people comparing our SNEAKIER generation to this one. We didnt even openly discuss CANCER....if someone had it...........we hid it..........imagine that????
We had just as many gay people......and just as many teen pregnancies........the difference was WE WERE FORCED TO KEEP SECRETS AND FORCED TO MARRY AND BECAUSE OF ECONOMICS WE WERE FORCED TO STAY MARRIED!!!!! abusive husband and all..... OMGGGGGGGGGG I am sick of this "The leave it to beaverssssssssss were soooooo clean and pristine" BS!!!
We got married because there was not the type of birth control that is out on the market now!!! There was not legalized abortion....women had 10 kids because of a lack of birth control methods...........AND WE WERE NOT BETTER BEHAVED..........WE WERE SNEAKIER AND OUT PARENTS WHIPPED OUR ASSES!!! if a boy got a girl pregnant he was FORCED TO MARRY HER!!! or she was forced to be hidden in an unwed mothers home and forced to give the baby up.
Please do your research and stop thinking we were so much better than the kids today...........after all they learned everything they know FROM US!!!

You never have great grandchildren. They are God's gift to people that have children.
