The old laws allowed divorce but then Christ says in the new testiment that you are an adultery the rest of your life if you divorce? So GOD would expect women and men to stay in abusive marriages? Someone please explain!

Permitted under some circumstances because of the hardness of the people’s hearts, but as explained by Jesus, “from the beginning it was not so” (Matt. 19: 3-12). Regulation concerning divorce under the law of Moses is found in Lev. 21: 14; Deut. 22: 19, 29; Deut. 24: 1-4. In the N.T. there are instructions relating to divorce in Matt. 5: 31-32; Matt. 19: 3-12; Mark 10: 2-12; Luke 16: 18; 1 Cor. 7: 10-17.

The first link in the source list has active links to each of these verses of scripture in the KJV of the Bible.

The second link is a good marriage building web site, the information found there could help a couple break out of the abusive behivors and learn to treat one another correctly.

OT: Leviticus 21: 14; Deuteronomy 22: 19, 29; 24:1-4; Isaiah 50:1; Jeremiah 3:8; Malachi 2:16.
NT: Matthew 5: 31-32; 19: 3-12; Mark 10: 2-12; Luke 16: 18; 1 Corinthians 7:10-17.
Divorce is not an unforgivable sin. God does not expect people to stay in abusive marriages. I have no problem with Christians divorcing and remarrying under certain circumstances.

Jesus was commenting on the common law practices. -Like he often did. You have to understand the context. First of all, men were the ones with all the rights here.

There were two (major) schools of thought -Hillel and Shammai, (great teachers a generation before Jesus). Jesus usually sided with Hillel but on the issue of divorce he sided with Shammai, (which is interesting in and of itself).

Basically, Hillel said that you could divorce your wife for "any unclean thing" (OT words). So, if she burned your toast, (or falafel) it could be grounds for divorce if the man wished. The less scrutable men would do this to drop and older wife (the wife of their youth) and go after a younger and prettier wife. Leaving the first wife out in the cold.

Shammai took the "any unclean thing" to mean one thing and one thing only -adultery. So, he stated you couldn't divorce your first wife unless she was unfaithful. -A much more merciful ruling for the wife.

Jesus was just agreeing with this side of the issue. He was in effect talking to the man, (at the time) and saying that you couldn't just drop your older wife for the new model because you felt like it. THAT man would be committing adultery, Jesus said.

It has implications for us today, (men and women) of course. The trick is to take this and apply it right now. God is a merciful and just. Jesus's point wasn't to trap people in bad relationships but to provide mercy to the woman who would be left without a husband. My view is this same merciful God wouldn't want someone to live in an abusive situation.

No God would NOT want someone to stay in a marriage in which they are being abused.
