if ure not experienced then get a vet to do it a few time for u and watch how he/she trims it.then when u are ready go to the pet store and get a clipper put ure dog on a leash tell another person to hold the leash and get the dog into the position tht the vet puts it in and cut the nail calmly DO NOT CUT ABOVE THE VEIN CUT UNDER IT AND THE VEIN IS BLACKISH OR REDDISH BLACKISH
WHEN U WALK URE DOG AND U HEAR A CLICK CLICK THEN ITS TIME TO CUT IT

You can do it if you have someone show you how to look for the veins (if the nails are light colored) or how to cut them if they are black and you can't see the veins. The veins come down pretty far in the nails and if you cut off too much, it hurts the dog and the nail will bleed. It wouldn't be life threatening or anything, but the worry would be that your dog would be reluctant to gets it's nails cut after that, fearing a painful experience.
So take your dog to the groomer's or the Vet's and let the tech there show you how to cut the dogs nails safely.

Hi Kylie Anne!

A Golden's nails are trimmed just like any other dogs. Basically, use a claw trimmer (not a human nail clipper) and clip down to just above the quick (the shadowy skin inside the nail).

http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/ClientED/dog_nails.aspx has detailed instruction and great photos to help wak you though it.

Trim them when they appear to be too long. Each dog's nails grows at different speeds.

A vet -can- do it, but doesn't have to. SOme people find it easiest to have a groomer do it when the dog gets groomed. My dog doesn't get groomed, so I do it myself when she starts to look like a lee press on nails user from the 80's.

Hope this helps! : )

However often they need trimming. Since I take my dog on long walks outside, I never have to trim his nails.

You should go to your local Petco/Petsmart and have someone there show you how to do it. It only costs around $8 so they could just do it for you every time if you are not sure how.

if you are uncomfortable cutting your dogs nails, then go to your vet and have them show you how to do it. It is not difficult to do. Below is a website with great photographs to help you learn how far to clip, how often and which tools to use. I personally like to use the guillotine type trimmers. good luck!

After you clip them, the vein in the nail recedes, so you can actually shorten them if you want. If you're worried about controlling the dog during clipping (they don't like it too much) you can have someone spoon-feed him peanut butter while you clip.
